Are you asking from a legal or moral point of view ? Legally the grage have done nothing wrong and are not to blame as it was rear ended. You are still obliged to pay for the work you asked them to do.I used to be me !! what happened0

Utter !!!!!
They werent neglient, provided the service charged for and hence you owe them the bill for that.
If they hadnt done the work you would have actually got far less than £1050.0 -

I don't think they do.
If what you're saying is true then you'd get the car back with no MOT and no work done to pass the test ie all the unsafe rust back in place.
But they did whatever was required to pass the MOT and then gave it a new MOT certificate - that's work you must pay for.
Any claim against the garage would have to be reduced by the cost of the work they carried out.
Incidentally - I've never known of a garage to take a car for a test drive after an MOT. You mentioned that the car failed due to rust - presumably the car was not structurally sound or safe. I can't think of any reason for that to need a test drive.
In my opinion, someone from the garage was using your car to run an errand and then used the "test drive" excuse when there was an incident.

I think you might find that pew pews comment was based on thinking that the garage were at faultIMOJACAR
