which site would you use rik?have now given up smoking since feb 13th 2014 loving the money I'm saving0 -
If you have 2 slots, then you can have 1.25 gig
If 4 then you can have 1.5 gig
But youll barely notice any difference between them unless you start using memory intensive programs (Clearly you dont now else your computer would be slower than a snail)
As for the memory sticks ~ id advise starting a new thread specifically finding the best place to get them from as people seem to find them from all sorts of places these days and as theyre quite old could save a bit of case doing it that way
I notice you went to the AMERICAN version of crucial
Go back to CRUCIAL.COM and make sure your in the ENGLISH version and scan again to find out how much they are from there so you can compare:idea:0 -

See here for prices. Thing is you will notice hardly any difference if you put more mem in , once you have 1gig memory. I only run 2 gig memory even tho' I've got loads laying about0 -

A: Possibly How much memory your Windows OS will recognize depends on which version of Windows you are running. 32-bit versions of Windows will see (and utilize) only 3GB or 3.5GB. To utilize more memory, install a 64-bit version of your OS. More information about OS memory maximums can be found at http://www.crucial.com/kb/answer.aspx?qid=4251.
Q: What memory goes into my computer, and can I mix speeds?
A: DDR memory with support for DDR PC2700,DDR PC3200 speeds. Because DDR memory is backward-compatible, you can safely upgrade your system with any of the guaranteed-compatible DDR speeds listed below, even if your manual calls for PC1600 or PC2100 speeds.
Q: How much memory can my computer handle?
A: 4096MB.
Adding the maximum amount of memory will improve performance and help extend the useful life of your system as you run increasingly demanding software applications in the future.
Q: Do I have to install matching pairs?
A: Yes. Your system requires that you install memory in pairs.
Q: Does my computer support dual-channel memory?
A: Yes. To benefit from the performance advantages offered by dual-channel systems, you should install memory in identical pairs. Installing a kitted pair is the best way to ensure that your modules are identical, right down to the chip count.
Q: Does my computer support ECC memory?
A: No. Your system does not support ECC. Because ECC and non-ECC modules should not be mixed within a system, install the same type of modules that are already in your system.

The MOBO takes up to 4 GB of 184-pin 2.5 V DIMM, has 4 memory slots, and is currently populated with 2 x 256 bars of PC3200.
I'm not convinced that buying brand new memory for an old [ish] machine makes sense, 4 x 512's or 2 x 1GiG's on ebay will cost about £30 to 40 [ish] and will give a good return for the money.
Either way any benefit to be had will - with one exception will mean discarding the current 2 x 256 bars ! That exception would be to get an additional 2 x 256 bars.
NOTE the displayed memory site says "" Our suggested upgrades 1.5GB Total "" I advise agaist this, it's always a fraught area when you mix chip sizes, and anyway memory should always be installed in identical pairs NOTE
You should not mix module size ! so the options are :
- throw away the current 256's and put in 4 x 512 bars DDR400
- throw away the current 256's and put in 2 or 4 x 1GiG bars of DDR400
- keep the current 256's and put in 2 more 256 bars of DDR400Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. I try to be an even-handed poster and accept that you at times may not agree with these opinions or how I choose to express them, this is not my problem.
