Consider for a moment that the chap has to run a vehicle, insurance and pay for equipment. He has to drive to buy the materials required, drive to your house, fit the tiles then drive back home again. Assuming he can grout the same day. Plus you are paying for his skill.

I'm surprised you're only getting quotes of £200.

Running costs these days are getting so high they simply can no longer be absorbed.

If you can come up with a Star Trek like teleporter you might be able to shave a few quid off the price.

    Yes.

That price probably includes lauing ply over the existing floor which is necessary when laying tiles on a wooden floor.

Yiou also need to remember that to tile a floor twice that size won't take twice as long. 20% of his time on a small job will be travelliing, setting up and cleaning away. An area twice that size would only be 10%. Small areas are disproportionately expensive as the tiler has the same 'on costs' regardless of time spent on the job.

  • You effectively need to pay for one day's work + basic materials.

In my experience (admittedly in London) most skilled tradesman seem to charge roughly £150 - £200 per day. I'm sure there are plenty who'll charge more than that too.

As has already been discussed in this thread, small jobs cost a disproportional amount more. It's likely to be the only job that can be fitted in on that day and the overheads are the same.

I know it sounds expensive, but when you think about it from the tiler's perspective then it isn't unreasonable. Do a bit of maths, let's be generous and assume they work 5 days a week 50 weeks of the year, for £200 a day. That would give them an income of 50k (that's probably an overestimate) from which you still need to deduct materials, overheads and tax. I don't know numbers, but running a vehicle doesn't come cheap, then they need tools, insurance and no doubt more things I haven't thought of. I suspect their take home pay is in the region of half what the customer pays. It's a skilled job and physically hard work, they earn their money!

I'm afraid £200 is a very reasonable price for a trustworthy professional. If you want it cheaper you can always try DIY. You might find a general handyman who'd fit other jobs in on the same day and charge you slightly less, but you probably wouldn't get such a high quality finish. At the end of the day you get what you pay for.

I have to agree with the comments already made that £200 is relatively inexpensive as your floor will need to be plylined for ceramic tiles if going onto floorboards, plus the use of more expensive flexible adhesive and grout. You could consider removing the sanitaryware before tiling to a) get a better looking finish and b) save the tiler time making all the difficult cuts around them (he might adjust the price). Unfortunately, although the size of a bathroom floor is usually fairly small, because it is trickier and takes longer, the cost seems high compared to tiling a larger area such as a kitchen or conservatory floor.

  • Hello to all tradesmen,
I am first time in the forum here and hope I can get help and advise from here.
We are running small business for property maintenance, development and care for 5th years now. It's including tiling, joiner and painting.
So far we have had not issue with our job's price except tiling, that tiling's job we usually charge between £15-£25 depending size of tiles for ceramic and between £25-£40 depending size of tiles for porcelain, stone, those prices including materials such as adhesive and grout. Mostly clients took it as too expensive. That always struggling us. Are the price expensive or reasonable?
Any help and advise would very grateful!
We are based in West Yorkshire.

    Thanks
    Mark :)

Hello to all site users. First time here.
    For mandempro
Tiling prices are always difficult. Qualified plumbers, electricians etc. have a back up from the government of what the rest of us can't legally do therefore their rates are good. For tiling no qualifications needed. People think it looks easy and so expect to pay much less. However when some of these people have a go themselves or find a cheap "tiler" they usually regret their decision . Good tiling takes time and skill and deserves better prices. Your prices are reasonable. Don't cut them. Better not to do the job than start working for peanuts. You'll end up a monkey!
If anything you are on the cheap side if you're including materials (except tiles)
  • hi i was just looking through google when i seen this, in some places 25 a meter is the standard start off meterage and can go up to 40 a mtr depending on size of tile and what kind it is eg natural stone ,porcalaine, ceramic , most companys wont do small jobs on a meterage base because of cost for deisel and time, as its normaly the small jobs that take the longest in most cases , if you are getting a cheap quot also to bare in mind are they using the correct adhesive for the job at hand eg naturalstone and heavier tiles need flexible adhesive even on the walls which is very expensive if you want a proper job steer away from the man at the pub and get it done right..

Is £350 a reasonable quote? Price is for a small toilet. Job is removing existing tiles and toilet. Retiling walls to mid-wall height together with tiling floor and then fitting new toilet. It is a small area, but I wouldn't think it would be the easiest job as space is tight. We would buy the tiles and toilet ourselves. The tiler would provide everything else.
  • please could you knowledgable folks give me a bit of a pointer on my quotes for bathroom tiling as I'm just not sure what to do:

We have a small bathroom with a bath and showerhead attached to the taps with a mixer. I want to move the shower head up the wall so that it can be used properly as a second shower and so need to have the currently tiling (half way up the wall) extended up to the ceiling in the area around the bath. The area is approx 12 sq ft in total.

I have had 2 quotes - one from a proper bathroom specialist who has quoted £430 (not including VAT) to supply and install white wall tiles and also to supply and fit a shower screen and pole for the shower head. The second quote is from a guy who just does tiling which is £220 to supply and fit the tiles and also mount a shower head. Looking at the price of screens I reckon £75 would do it which roughly says to me that I'm being quoted an extra £135 for fitting the screen..... Just not sure what's best to do now as I'm happy to pay the right price for the job to be done well but don't want to pay over the odds obviously!

    Any ideas?
