Expect to pay between £18-£22 per square meter for tiling work (tiles not included unless they are dirt cheap ones). I have more info on average tiling prices, available on request.0

I've had a quote from a plumber who came recommended from one of the guys at work to refit my bathroom which I like to run past you guys. The quote for refitting the bathroom is reasonable at £325 (I'm supplying the new suite) to remove the skirting board and tile the floor and tile where the old skirting board was is £175 (the floor is 6ft x 4ft again I'm supplying the tiles) but where I've had a shock is the cost of tiling the shower walls which is £350. Now there are three walls which in total is 10ft x 5ft and (I'm supplying the tiles which are 40 x 21) and he's retiling over the old tiles as these are solid, and there aren't any tricky or fiddly bits it's all quite straightforward. So my question is is £350 abit OTT? With the floor only costing £175 I expected £200-£250 at the very, very most.

Good morning: You need to get at least 3 quotes in and compare like for like....if you have seen the plumber's work or have had a personal recommendation from a source you trust and you know he/she does a quality job then perhaps it would be worth paying a bit more. My OH would definitely charge more to install the new sanitaryware but less to tile your small area with no border tiles/snazzy bits (based soley on the details supplied by you).;)

I would not get a plumber to do my tiling. Make sure that the person understands everything to do with tiling.
For example if your "tiler" is going to tile on tile what is the original tile fixed to. If it is plaster then your are going to go over the safe weight for a plaster surface.I would not do this for H&S reasons.

Good evening: I think you will find that many plumbers make very good tilers...part of a complete bathroom installation package should include plumbing, electrics ( ability to self-certify), carpentry, plastering, general building works, decorating and tiling...my OH, does all of the aforementioned as well as central heating installations to a high standard. Any plumber who has completed a 5 year apprenticeship and has mastered complex leadwork etc. would not find making good a wall or floor, setting out tiles, cutting using nips, tile saw, hole saw, electric and manual tile cutters, mixing adhesives/grouts, grouting, sealing and so on beyond his or her comprehension or abilities. A good tradesperson can master many other trades over the years,if he or she so chooses, by observing, asking questions, seeking instruction, and most importantly, trying his or her hand at almost anything in the industry (within the laws, regulations and reason).

Sorry if my post reads wrong...
I agree that if the plumber has spent time and money in training and researching the other trades then there is no reason why they could not do the tiling.
There are however plumbers who think that is is as simple as sticking tiles on the wall.
A friend of mine is a technical advisor. Recently he was involved in a court case where a tile fell from the bathroom wall onto a young girl in the bath. She subsequently suffered brain damage. It was proved that the plumber was incompetent as he had no formal training in tiling....
sorry if i offended any one that was not my intention

Good morning: Interesting...can I assume the prosecution was through the Health and Safety Executive (HSE)? They maintain an online register of cases/breaches...would like to check it out if possible...professional curiosity you see;)

i beleive that it was a direct prosecution not bought through the HSE but will ask for sure...
