car insuarance for a 17 year old male

This thread has certainly caused some interest. Let's face it, there are parents with young sons and (daughters) desperately wanting to drive. The law says that they can start at 17. They have a bad reputation, which is justified by the stats. All the boys get tarnished with the same brush. The premiums are going sky high, by the year. They should probably raise the driving test to, say 20, but that is another matter. Some of the posters on here are well meaning, others are NOT. If there have been lots of threads and postings about this subject, then it means something is wrong, but certain others should well remember that this problem of high insurance for young people is ongoing and that it will crop again and again as parents offspring reach 17/18. I never gave it a thought until a few months ago. Indeed childless posters on here should think before they criticise for too many postings on the same Subject. After all, all we want is the cheapest and best insurance for our loved ones, and this could be changing on a weely basis.0

While this thread is still alive, could I ask an insurance question please.
My son will be the main driver and my wife will be a named driver.
The questions when filling out insrance quotes online are
1) Registered Keeper
2)Legal owner
Now I have done a forum search and it came up blank.
My question is, do these have any bearing on insurance if my son is both or my wife is both.
I do understand that any speeding tickets and speeding fines will be sent to the registered keeper. For insurance purposes, does it have any effect.
Having your son as either (or both) the RK or legal owner would cause the Insurer to investigate and there is a very good chance they would class it as the word we are not permitted to use on PCPlods thread.
If Insurers suspect &$£%@ing some of the methods they do are check the log book for keepers / previous keepers, they also often contact the seller and
ask who the receipt was made out to.
You will also find most companies will not want to quote if the owner and RK are not the policy holder0 -
We are frustrated, because we are going to spend more on car insurance than the car, my sons frustrated because because all he wants to do his go for a drive and that we have made him do the pass plus to try and push the insurance down.
Then we have a 16 year old, turning 17 in September (I can only blame my wife and I and a bottle of whisky)0 -

Thanks for your reply. I can understand your final sentence, not sure about the first, As my son will be the main driver, I thought it only natural that he should be the RK and LO eg he will be the policy holder.0 -

Yes, it costs several thousand more to buy but you have to consider when you might sell it and how much it will depreciate and the extra warranty.
I would imagine a number of factors are taken into consideration, including your age, the car, driving experience and risk postcode.
How on earth does that work? Just doesn't seem to make sense. You buy 2 cars, one a 58 plate, one a 59 plate, and it is less to insure the 59 plate? Usually it is more expensive is it not because it is worth more and within a year a fully comp policy will usually replace a car. Don't understand that one seems bizarre!0 -

The Pass Plus is a great scheme, unfortunately it does not have the same impact on premiums as it used to, but it will greatly improve your son's driving skills so will reduce the chances of him having an accident which is obviously a good thing and potentially save in premiums in the long run.
Your original post mentioned your son is the main user and was asking the consequences of your wife being the owner and registered keeper. My answer was aimed at your wife being RK and owner and policy holder.
If your son has a provisional avoid Quinn as they will charge a massive additional premium when he passes and they are not all that.
What sort of car is your son looking at eg model, year and value?0 -

Thats exactly what I thought when I first discovered it!
If its a 58, 09 or 59 from 2009 its cheaper than a 57, 08 or 58 from 2008.
I can only assume its because if you have a brand new car, you are more likely to be careful and not crash it? Or maybe its because brand new cars are really expensive. I don't know! In the case of the astra, full list price is about 18 grand.... or about 12 grand pre-reg with 1000 miles.
I've been playing around with possible quotes on comparison websites for a few months now and know how to get the cheapest quote for me.
I think for most 'profiles' of drivers there will be a specific car which is particularly cheap compared to the rest. Fiestas, Saxos, Clios. I tried them all. For me, the cheap one appears to be the Ford Ka. A girly car for a bloke? Hmm. Myabe thats why its cheaper. The SportKa isnt too much more so i've been shopping around for one of those.0 -
Diesel, remind me what you are paying for your son and who it is from. Have i got it right, before long you will have 2 young sons on the same car, lots of dosh to be paid out. I am not laughing as i may be in a similar position. As you will know i am just in the process of insuring son no 1 and my middle son is aged 14 years and 10 months so will probably have 2 sons for the Fiesta, oh dear!
PS pcplod! - charming*********0 -
newfoundglory, my son's friends call it the ford Ka the "gay'A', sorry, but no cred0

Thanks, yes I'm with you now, yes, when we did a lot of online quotes and pass plus discounted the price quite a bit,you have said my son will gain driving skillls, which in turn, should help keep his skill level up and claims down.
He learnt and passed in a Corsa,I have read that they in turn could add to the price of the insurance, lookiing at a 1999/2000 plate.0
