Could I be really cheeky and ask for some help with my CV.

I have not been working due to illness for about 2 years but really want to try to get back to doing some local part-time work. Have seen a job doing admin at a local school which sounds ok. But it is about 10 years since I did a proper CV and just don't know where to start.

    Thanks

Munchki, I've wondered whether to post this, but hey you can hate me if you like ;)

I have a feeling that earlier on you said you had a 21 yo son? So is it possible that the people being chosen for the jobs are (ahem) younger than you? (See, that's why I wondered....) If so, maybe you can play up the +ve elements - experience, maturity, decision making (likely to be sounder than whippersnappers based on experience and maturity), wanting a firm foundation to build on (whereas youngsters are likely to get 2 years experience and move on to the next big thing) etc.

Sorry if this offends, as if I'd started earlier I could very well have a 21 yo myself, but just has me wondering if you are coming up against a touch of ageism here?

Em, I don't think anyone can give you your answer (as I know you know;)). I think it is more unusual to turn stuff down than take it but maybe thats why you are posting here rather than talking to people who you know would say you are mad to turn it down.
I don't think its crazy to turn things down. I took a big pay cut and career change at 30 because I knew I wouldn't stay content in my job for much longer (despite having promotions and people telling me I had what it took to go much further). So I started again and that was great - now I have children and am a full time mum and home educator I have to work a new plan out.
You sound fairly self aware and I think you are wise to think about it and not just do the obvious. Also you said you wanted the 10k to feel more secure for starting a family I think. This job might provide that financial security but is the extra stress helpful and would you want extra challenges when dealing with morning sickness etc. Will you want to return to work part time if you do have a baby and will that be as easy in the new job as the one you are in?
Not saying don't go for it but do consider how it fits in with the plans you want for your life.
Just waiting now for you to say it wasn't you who said about starting a family:o

not offended at all!! I have no doubt after attending some interviews recently that it is an age thing, however they seem to see it from the point of view the younger they are the cheaper they are and they can be molded to fit their views. So unfair

    Hi everyone,

I know I don't post much but I read everything and think you are all amazing.

Saucy, I moved to Germany when I was 19 and have never looked back. I have ended up living in some amazing countries and met some great friends. Really gives you a completely different outlook on life. You will love it.

I struggle everyday with depression and chronic back pain but I tell myself to just do one thing. If I get one thing done I feel like I have achieved something. I used to be superwoman but it is not all it is cracked up to be :)

You all get so much done everyday I am amazed. Don't be hard on yourselves :-)

Today I managed to do the grocery shopping and only spent £36. Miracle for me. I even still bought a few things not on the list.

    Anyway, keep it up guys.

    Me xxx

    Thanks for your lovely post.

I admire the way you have found what works for you, and have found a way to move forward at your own pace :A, that takes strength of character.

Em, what a lovely position to be in, you are obviously a very talented and valued employee. What does OH think?

jo70mo - thanks for your post, it's like you've expressed exactly how i'm feeling! Yes you're right about starting a family and i think that's what's holding me back, whereas previously i'd have snapped their hand off. It's helpful to see my thoughts in your words; it's easy to allow ego to dictate and to ignore the more important, truly valuable things in life.
scrooge2008 - thank you :) OH doesn't really have an opinion! I guess it's good as he says i should do what makes me happy, but it does make me feel like shaking him for an answer! He says 'yeah yeah good good' aggghhhh! so frustrating! It does feel that yesterday my life was more simple - i'm almost resenting the opportunity which is stupid!
    Just £10,852.28p to go...

OK, so can you turn it to your advantage? Like I say most youngsters are after the next company on their CV (I've been that youngster) and are convinced they are god's gift. An older person can see things from more perspectives and bring more ideas to the party. A more forward-thinking company won't just want a yes man/woman but someone who can push things forward and bring new viewpoints and experiences to play. I'd say an older person is also tending to want somewhere that they can settle in and find their niche. So can you play up that you want to be happy with them as you aren't just looking towards the next year or two, but the next several/many years and somewhere that you can really settle in and grow with the company and prove your worth?

Sure you've probably done all this, but it might be worth assuming ageism is in play and interview accordingly.
