Cant decide what to spend on engagement ring

OUCH!!!!!!
I don't think of my ring as some crass status symbol thank you. I am really angry now and trying not to say something mean. I am fussy about what I want and will wear it for the rest of my life- does it matter how much it cost? If it was 10p or £10k it wouldn't matter. I also hinted on silver or platinum so he could have picked either, it just so happened he had the money for that. I won't go into the reasons why he had the money, but he wouldn't have had it normally and he really wanted me to love it.
PS Frannyann, love yours too- the contrast in colours is gorgeous!!
Birduk, methinks that someone has some VERY sour grapes!!
I love my little ring, as I have stupidly small hands its in proportion to my fingers, OH was so worried it wasn't 'good enough' Silly sod, like I need a big ring to tell me how much he loves me. He does that perfectly well by being a lovely partner and an amazing step dad!:rotfl:Ahahah got my signature removed for claiming MSE thought it was too boring :rotfl:0 -
not having one is not my choice but we are on a budget. I would like an antique cheap ring but we cant afford one. ?
Hi Angel, have you thought of going to Brighton, the 'Gold' laines are amazing for Antique rings. As there are so many shops the competition is fierce to sell and the chances to haggle are plentyful! I go there and if I wasn't careful would come back with so many amazing rings at frankly silly prices!:rotfl:Ahahah got my signature removed for claiming MSE thought it was too boring :rotfl:0 -

I got my first engagment ring (when i was 16... bless) in the brighton lanes, it's a 0.25 carat diamond solitaire and i still have it... going cheap haha!
Now I have a whopper of a ring, didn't know how much it was worth until i saw it on the insurance (as it's all in my name) but it's very unusual and lovely, and of course it has sentimental value to his family.0 -

Ah whereas I have big fat sausage fingers so a small ring would be dwarfed! I think the way it is slightly twisted also draws attention away from their fatness! :rotfl:
Thanks Frannyann, much appreciated. Nothing says 'I love you' to me more than a man clearing up cat sick..... when they are your cats... (well ours now!).

ive not been to brighton (i am not from se originally) so i didnt know what might be there. that would be really nice as 1 ring with plenty of uses would suit me the best. i LOVE brooches so i would be happy with some of them otherwise as i am addicted0 -

If he doesn't want to save his money then who are we to stop him?
My ring was just over £500 everyone has a budget some bigger than others his is obviously bigger than yours and mine but good luck to him if he wants to spend that sort of money.
I just hope she doesn't lose it.
i understand but why not post this is the ring i like and see if people can find it cheaper elsewhere? that way really get a bargain as we all know prices can vary so dramatically.0 -
OH definitely loves it, have a choice of 3 and she has asked me to choose. Just need to decide what quality of diamonds. Budget isn't so relevant we have enough money my only fear is to look back and wish I'd bought the better ring.
The way it was put to me when I went and got mine in Hatton Garden is that the DIAMOND is the part that has value! Get the very best cut and clarity that you can, then the size that suits your budget! Not sure where you are getting yours from, but in Hatton Garden they set the stone for free for us."there are some persons in this World who, unable to give better proof of being wise, take a strange delight in showing what they think they have sagaciously read in mankind by uncharitable suspicions of them"(Herman Melville)0 -

Ohhh, You MUST go, its a fab day out and the 'Gold' laines are amazing. So many shops all dealing in the most amazing rings etc. If you see a slightly crazed women licking the windows, that will be me!
This one is one of my favs http://www.selby-jewellers.co.uk/
Ignore the prices on the website, once in the shop a few mins of 'ummm, err, its a 'bit' above my budget' will see a reduction:rotfl:Ahahah got my signature removed for claiming MSE thought it was too boring :rotfl:0 -
wow, thanks everyone for all your comments. I am happy with the amount I've spent. Both of us earn good money, don't have children, worked hard getting onto the property market, and save money in lots of other areas. Of course I could spend £200, but its as simple as living within means, and I'm lucky to be able to do that. I also start with the end in mind which is that the ring will last a lifetime, and so I don't want to look back with more money in my pocket in 10 years time and wish I had bought that extra special ring.
I asked my OH already and she said yesand helped me to narrow down the options, so I know she will be happy with it. I think I will make a fuss when it arrives though and ask again with the ring in hand this time. Fingers crossed she won't have changed her mind!
