why bother? ive not even got a ring and probably won't get a wedding one either as it saves money.

If thats what he wants to do then thats his choice like it was yours not to have one.

not having one is not my choice but we are on a budget. I would like an antique cheap ring but we cant afford one. we have waited 2 years to try and get married becuase we cant afford it but in that time things have just gone up and up so we have decided if we just leave it we will never afford anything.

i just think anything over £200 for a ring when we are in a money saving forum and people have strict budgets just seems a bit strange. yes it is his choice but i thought the point of the forum was to help people budget and save money.

im not meaning to sound mean but our entire budget was £1000 and now increased to £3000 as a maximum so to spend 10% of that on just one of the rings would mean theres nothing left for the ceremony.

i dont care if people spend 40k on a wedding but then why come into a money saving forum?

He wasn't asking advice on how much he should spend he was asking which ring he should choose and gave us the options.

If he doesn't want to save his money then who are we to stop him?

My ring was just over £500 everyone has a budget some bigger than others his is obviously bigger than yours and mine but good luck to him if he wants to spend that sort of money.

I just hope she doesn't lose it.

Some people can afford to spend £2k on a ring, some can't, some don't want to. Doesn't mean that those that do are wrong in some way. Perhaps the O saves money in other ways - on his food bill, on holidays or cars, in order to be able to spend this amount of money on something he wants to buy.
I have been given a beautiful engagement ring by my fiance and I don't know how much it cost nor am I desperate to find out. The only thing I want to 'show off' is the fact that we are engaged to be married which is something I am incredibly excited about. And I love the fact that he chose me this gorgeous ring - every time I look at it I think of how much care he took over it and the committment it symbolises.
We will be having a big wedding compared to some but it doesn't mean that I don't want to save money in other areas! For me moneysaving is about getting the best deals for my money, I'm lucky enough that it isn't necessity but done to minimize waste and add luxuries to our lifestyle. There is really no need to be so judgemental. Chip on shoulder springs to mind.

Well said borokat, that's what I was trying to get at last night :T. I will be having quite a big wedding (i.e having some things that others may not see as essential) but I still want to save money on the stuff I do have and get the best deal. I think the OP has the right to spend whatever he wants on a ring for his fiancee, if it's within his budget then good on him. I think some people are being rather disrespectful, the poor guy only wanted some advice...

It should be about committing to the one you love, not some crass status symbol.

I'm glad I'm not marrying you- no offence!

I think the cheap(er) ring looks lovely. :)

    OUCH!!!!!!

I don't think of my ring as some crass status symbol thank you. I am really angry now and trying not to say something mean. I am fussy about what I want and will wear it for the rest of my life- does it matter how much it cost? If it was 10p or £10k it wouldn't matter. I also hinted on silver or platinum so he could have picked either, it just so happened he had the money for that. I won't go into the reasons why he had the money, but he wouldn't have had it normally and he really wanted me to love it.

PS Frannyann, love yours too- the contrast in colours is gorgeous!!

Don't worry birduk, you don't have to justify yourself for spending what u want on an engagement ring (or rather your fiance, but you know what i mean), someone obv has a chip on their shoulder about something...

Wow- how horrid has this thread turned.

ler01kjh- I hope your girlfriend was delighted with the ring and said yes. I hope she has many happy years wearing it.

with regards to this thread. i say each to their own!
i picked my ring when my partner said i could have any ring i wanted regardless of the price. like my dress, i knew it was "the one" and it cost £350.

i hope the OPs partner loved her ring.
