I just booked a car in Cape Town for a week @£97 vs £145. The rate includes SCDW and STP, so no excess and nothing else to pay. I did it over the phone (it's the only way to discuss SCDW etc.)

I used the A code given below by Mr Warren and only after booking it did I spot the note from another poster saying it's an Avis Emloyee code and they will require ID.

Oh dear. Mr Warren, have people used that code and not been asked for ID or have I created a problem for myself and in the bargain hired a very expensive car?

    Thx.

    S

p.s. I called Avis back and it's just a discount code, nowt to do with Avis employee. He wasn't able to tell me what it is, just said it was a 'holiday discount code' and was quite happy for it to stand.
  • Hi smarno. You have 2 choices here. Apply for any position at Avis and wear your badge with pride when you collect your car or just go-ahead with the booking as such and look puzzled when asked for proof of ID. After all you are on holiday and the last thing you take with you is a copy of your pay cheque. If the matter arises, just tell them HR department do the bookings to avoid fraudulent uses.

Relax enjoy the discount and please let us know when you get back.

Firstly, Thanks to Mr Warren for the post. I have used the code twice now and saved around £100 on the normal Avis price. It makes Avis actually competative.

Something not mentioned is Quidco.com members can get an additional £5.00 per rental back.

    Thanks again.

Cashback - can you confirm yo used the A...code and that it worked ok?

Mr Warren you are shameless! :-) I'm not against blagging but imagine one is in an accident - do you not think one's blag will be revealed and some 'get out' clause invoked. Really Sir (or are you a madam), you must think more carefully about the consequences of your blags.

So here's the thing - if nobody asks me for ID then fine, the nice man on the phone gave me the right info and the code is good to use. If they ask me for ID I will tell the truth...er..LOL....that my boyfriend gave me the code, then told me after I had booked that it was an Avis employee code. On finding this out I called Avis pronto to let them know but they let the booking stand. I'm sure my second call is on record and I will insist that they check their computer records etc.

LOL - what a game this is.

  • Hi Miss S. Discount codes or not cannot have any consequence on (i don't wish it) should you have an accident. It's a bit like having a car accident and the insurance company not giving you cover because you were not wearing your seat belt. Two very specific different matters. I have had my fare share of hired car in the last 20 years and have NEVER been asked for anything else than my driving licence and credit card details.......And by the way, I love South Africa.

Mr W, I can't make up my mind whether your example is the same thing or not but either way you must forgive my caution.... I'm still trying to get my head round this 'something for nothing' treasure trove.

Do you mind if I ask where these Avis codes come from or is that a no no question?

Well it's been quite a couple of days. Other than the £50 Avis discount, I bought 3 pairs of Jeans from La Redoute for 80p last night by using a code I picked up on another thread. What a bargain, they should have been £55 each but were incorrectly marked down to £3.60....and the code gave £10 discount and free P&P.

All in all £200+ saved. Remarkable.

    Thanks for the codes....

    Regards.

  • Avis codes (and others) come from a traveller's website of which I am a member. All code tested and confirmed as being trouble free.......what size Jeans did you buy? ;)
  • :T Cheers Mr Warren, I'm going to Cambrils near Salou at the end of the month and I really wanted to book the car through Avis, as Avis is based in the hotel I am stopping at. All other car companys require a bus journey.

With this code, I reduced the weeks premium from £146 to £86, which is a huge reduction. This is a basic grade A car (Corsa) with excess of 495 Euros. As I am new to driving abroad I didn't want to risk an accident so I took out an annual excess waiver policy at £49 for the year.

Avis even gave me 1000 bonus Tesco points plus 860, for the spend so I was even more excited.

    Thanks again, Dell. :j
  • Good for you Dell please remember to let us know how you got on but also take it easy as it is your first time driving abroad. Please remember some basics to remember to keep to the right lane on roads. ......."Think about yourself in a driving situation in the UK and apply this whilst driving in Spain, you will automatically remember to stick to the correct side of the Spanish roads". Take care whilst leaving a petrol station or a parking lot after a break. This is when your concentration goes and you might end up on the wrong side of the road.....so think about this UK piece of driving, it has always worked for me. ;)
