Me & OH are ttc in approx 2 months as we have a holiday booked so today i booked into the doctors to ask for advice preconception checks etc as this is our first child and what he recommend, just going for reassurance and i came out feeling really stupid but he has given me a presciption for folic acid which i hadnt asked for but hey

Hi and welcome to the mad house ILOVEHOLIDAYS.
Ideally you should be aiming to start taking Folic Acid 400mcg from as little as 3 months before ttc. I dont think it really matters if you go out and buy any of the ones for preconception or just bog standard folic acid but many of us here prefer the all in ones as we know you are giving your body optimum amount of vits, minerals and other known substances needed for a healthy body ready for conception. You can only take the Folic acid on its own until 12 weeks bfp, something to do with too much vit a in them.

Dont feel any of the questions you may have are daft, as at some point we have all had the odd niggle and thought we cant ask something as we will look stupid, but if you dont ask you wont know.
On the subject of ttc, what forms of contraception have you used upto know? This will help some of the more knowledgeable track how long till you are fully fertile. It would also be great if you can add a little detail about yourself along the lines of - iloveholidays, age, ttc since xx 2010, baby #1 and any health related probs you may know of which could hinder ttc.

The lovely CONFUZZLED keeps a diary for all the ladies on here to track cycles so when you know when next AF is due, a test date is put next to your name and we al sit with fingers crossed.

Oh and dont think you cant type something here as its too much info as these nosey lot thrive on it - always ready with a helping hand, shoulder to cry on or in some (virtual) cases chocs and cake as and when you need it.

For those of us having trouble conceiving, does one go to the docs after 12 months trying? Is that the norm?

For me for instance, I conceived in June (TTC from June) but miscarried in Aug. do I go in June 2010?

    congratulations rik x

I think it is personal when you go to the docs, with my first it took around 3 years to get pregnant but I never went to the docs because I was in my early 20s so we decided we would just see what happens and go to the docs later. Had I been late 30s or closer to 40 I would probably have gone after 6 months, they may have sent me away for another 6 months but there is less time so I'd want to just make sure I was doing everything I could.

I'm going to the docs now but not because of how long its taken because of all the mcs.

I had used no contraception at all when i met my husband 3 years ago and nothing natuurally happened in the first year. We went to the drs as felt a lot of pressure from his parents because his evil ex unknown to us had told them my OH could not have children and thats why they had never had them. I found out in the 8 years they were together and meant to be ttc my OH had done what he could but she sneekily had been having the injection and then the truth came out about the affair. So with all the added pressure went to the dr who told us to give it another 6 months and see how things went, but did send off for hubby to have SA and i had complete blood tests done which came back clear.

We were referred to the fertility clinic and had first app in April last year and i mc'd with our first pg nye. Gp was not to worried initially as i have 3 children from a previous relationship.

In your circumstances Quaver is it possible just to enquire what your gps protocol is on your next visit? That way you will have some clearer picture, they may think it is not necessary to do anything just yet as you have had 1 pg even if it didnt go to term.

I used the pill but came off it in oct just to make sure that it was fully out of my system iykwim
You can only take the Folic acid on its own until 12 weeks bfp, something to do with too much vit a in them. does this mean i have to start taking the mum to be once i am pregnant? as they contain folic acid too dont they?
we have got the start date of ttc around the 12th April as thats when we are back from hols - do i wait until then to give my details for Confuzzled's diary?
This is a great forum girles and hope to get to know you all better!!
