Jakesmum we have booked the 16th. Not having been to new york before we booked flights and hotel separately but expedia offered some great flight hotel combinations that were cheaper. I have flown with virgin many times to Vegas or Florida and have nearly always managed to get extra leg room at little or no extra cost just by arriving at the airport early and asking nicely, I did notice that the last time we flew (march) it was asking for extra money to prebook our seats. To be honest we take our chances at not being seated together as it's only 8ish hours and we'd sooner spend the money on the holiday. It's only been 1 time so far that we were not seated together.

Ahh thank you queengoth, I will go have a look on expedia and skyscanner and play around with the dates a bit :) As we get airport special assistance, not sitting together is never something we have to worry about thankfully as we are classed as each other carers but it also means that we are not allowed to sit in the emergency exit rows so we have never got an upgrade at the counter . . though SA do tend to do all our baggage, talking to check in type stuff as its a bit hard to get near in the wheelchairs :o

Having plumped him a bit via generic 'hmm where do you think we should go for our next great escape' type convo he has also said about Hong Kong so am having a look at there as well as those flights are coming in quite cheap as well (was hoping for a Hong Kong thread like this one, but I can't find one :o )

The $130 is city or resort tax and is payable per room not person, Enjoy!

We are travelling to NY in a little over a week for 6 days. Looking at sightseeing - is it worth buying one of the all-in tickets that are available (ie - newyorkpass)?

Hi mintster, i visited NY in 2015 for my first time and we bought a 3 day new york pass and i must say we found that it was well worth it, we were actually there for 6 days but my brother got married in central park on our 3rd day, therefore because the pass is for consecutive days we started ours after the wedding (sat, sun and mon) we were leaving on the evening of the mon so only really had 2 1/2 days but we managed totr, esb,wtc liberty boat ride. We used the free hop on hop off bus pass and did all the routes brooklyn, harlem. we just worked out the places we wanted to be and did all the things together. i really enjoyed the bus tours as the guide know lots and i found out lots of very interesting things. As you can use the bus whenever you need you can use them to get to other places of interest.

some of the passes are not worth it. There is this one - https://www.smartdestinations.com/new-york-attractions-and-tours/_d_Nyc-p1.html?pass=Nyc_Prod_Exp - allows you to choose what attractions you want, and apply some discount. This means you get exactly what you want to see at a discount. It's the only sensible pass.

If you move your mouse to close the window, it should pop up with a subscribe link, sign up, get the 5% discount, and then unsubscribe.

We are very much people who book the best hotels we can afford as we are both disabled so our hotel room isnt just 'somewhere to lay our head', we spend quite a lot of time in the hotel/room between sightseeing and (hopefully) the above hotel will give some idea of what i'm looking for. Does anyone have any recommendations for hotels in the 4* to 5* range (or even 3* that you've walked into and wondered how the heck its only classed as a 3*).

Times square is currently my go to area (just because that is where we stayed before so i know where I am) but if there are other areas near to things like TOTR, Central Park that anyone thought was an awesome place to stay i'm seriously open to any recommendations.

Please have a look at DOUBLETREE SUITES - TIMES SQUARE. While the Intercontinental is a bit swisher - the Doubletree is what it says - all rooms are 2 room suites, with a lounge area, small kitchen area and a bedroom. Of course, you can book an accessible suite, so that you will have the purpose use bathroom.

If you are going to spend time in the room - then this is ideal - if one person wants to sleep, the other can be in the lounge area, and watch TV, have a small bite, etc..

It's right in the heart of Times Square (opposite the TKTS discount ticket stand).

All buses in New York are wheel chair accessible - my mum lives in NY (I am from NY but live in UK) and while not disabled, she does require a walker - so I know she can get on any bus in NY.

Have you been to Hi Line park - it's the one near the meat packing district by the hudson river - built on a dis-used overground railway line. There are several entrances that have lifts from the ground - again I know because I have taken my mum. As example one can take a cross town 23rd street bus to 11th avenue - access Hi Line Park at 23rd st - then traverse hi line park to 14th street - take the lift down - and take a cross town 14th street bus.

The other thing I can recommend - and have done it with my mum (who is 83 by the way) - is go on the brooklyn bridge. You can access the bridge (dedicated areas for walking and bicycles so completely flat) at City Hall - I would recommend rather than going all across to go half way or so - and then come back to your start point - views are amazing !!

If you do wish to use the subways - here is a link for accessible stations (many are NOT accessible and only have stairs):

    http://web.mta.info/accessibility/stations.htm

I do use the subways with my mum. Where she lives (in an area called Bronx) the subway is above ground - and there is a lift at her station. However quite often we need to get off at a station with only stairs in Manhattan - as the subway is not deep underground - as it is in london - she is able to slowly walk up + down stairs to street level. If this is not possible for you - you are better off using the buses - takes a bit longer, but you get to see things.

American Museum of Natural History as well as Metropolitain Museum of Art are both HUGE and both accessible. Both places have "recommended" admission prices - but you can pay whatever you want. I mention this, as you may find it easier rather than doing the museum in one go, to go one day for say 2 hours, then come back another day for 2 hours. So pay 1/2 the recommended admission each time.

If you are going to see a Broadway show - please note that not all theatres are accessible - or the seats may be, but bathroom facilities will not be. You need to do your research here to make sure you will be comfortable. Many restaurants (particularly bathrooms) are not accessible - I know this not only because of my mum but my cousin who is in a wheelchair - and travels the world - she is remarkable !! So again, do your research not to be disappointed.

And as last point - April will be the start of baseball season. My team, NY Yankees had a great season this year - and just missed out on going to the finals (World Series). The new stadium - opened in 2009 is completely wheel chair accessible on all levels - and even if you dont know baseball - the whole experience is superb - nothing like going to football here in UK.

    Hope that all helps
    Daniel
