    Hi,
I am currently trying to navigate my way around all of this information!Flights are booked for 4th Jan for 4 nights flying into JFK.
Ive provisionally booked RIU Plaza TS (which I can cancel) having started reading some of the info it looks like we should be looking elsewhere to stay.
There's 3 adults going (taking our son for his 21st) I would love to know where M4RKM thinks we should stay or if anyone else can recommend area, that ideally has nice places to eat, good food not necessarily posh restaurants.
    Thanks
M4rk hasn't been around for a while sadly . around TS ive stayed in the westin TS. The grand Hyatt central sta. & The New Yorker 34th by macys & MSG , all good . food . all depends what you like and what your budget shulas steakhouse is tops but pricey . Juniours by the minskoff is very American diner . some good Chinese and vietamese around hells kitchen . I would rather have a good fish dish so tastes differ to some
 hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world

We have the recommended Barclaycard for spending abroad but whilst Barclays don't charge for cash withdrawals at ATMs , we found most American banks charge $3 per withdrawal. However an ATM in McDonalds only charges $1.19 and if you can find a Santander ATM, it's free.

Actually in central NY/Manhattan we seemed to see a lot of Santanders ATMs so that's a good tip.

Hi all... Off for a pre-xmas trip at the end of Nov (my 2nd time) for a surprise for my fellas 30th (he's never been, and I'm telling him we're going to Dublin, until we get to check in at the airport!)

You'll need to get his e-visa for him then or update his existing one - don't forget!

Good evening everyone :) I'm fairly new to this area of the boards (I tend to hang around on the SPC challenge thread in DFW) anyway, i'm looking to book a surprise trip for my husband to NYC next April, we have been once before and stayed at the Intercontinental on Times Square (which we loved!) in previous musing convo's with 'himself' he has said he would like to return to the same hotel as the rooms were so spacious etc. I on the other hand would hate to cross out every other hotel in NY just because we had an awesome time at Intercontinental!

We are very much people who book the best hotels we can afford as we are both disabled so our hotel room isnt just 'somewhere to lay our head', we spend quite a lot of time in the hotel/room between sightseeing and (hopefully) the above hotel will give some idea of what i'm looking for. Does anyone have any recommendations for hotels in the 4* to 5* range (or even 3* that you've walked into and wondered how the heck its only classed as a 3*).

Times square is currently my go to area (just because that is where we stayed before so i know where I am) but if there are other areas near to things like TOTR, Central Park that anyone thought was an awesome place to stay i'm seriously open to any recommendations.

Have been looking at flights but not sure whether to hold off and see if there's a decent sale later in the year/beginning of next. So far its coming in at £1200 for the two of us flying Virgin from LHR, economy out, PE back

Thank you in advance to anyone who answers :)

  • Just booked my first trip to New York , but I am also going in April next year. Booked through sky scanner and got economy tickets on virgin at £330 per person. £1200 for both seems pricey but maybe it's worth the extra to you for premium ?

We have flown home economy both times we've been to the US and tbh, it played havok with my health issues so I was hoping flying back premium and having that bit more room might help me to sleep meaning I wont suffer as much. If it works it would be well worth the extra £400 for the 2 of us :) What dates did you book if you don't mind me asking? as ours were coming in at £400 for 17th and that was the cheapest on economy I could find. I am a little restricted as I don't really want to foist my kids on their gran during school holidays, if she's being good enough to look after them I can at least make sure they are in school for part of the day :rotfl: (she loves them really :rotfl: )

  • hi

have you looked at google flights?skyscanner? for flights. with google flights you can play about with dates and see the price.

As for hotels we have stayed at the sheraton times sqaure, 5mins from central part probably about 8-9mins from totr, times sqaure aint too far from the hotel too.we loved the location though, it was my brother and I, , all we really needed was a good bed, a room with a shower, there was a pub)ook many pubs :D )D close by as well as a pizzeria !!
do you use facebook? if you do prehaps a lil message to whatever airline you are considering, telling them about the surprise holiday n stuff and if there is anything they could do for you.
I tried this with united about 18months ago and got upgrades for the transalantic flight, from econ to P.E so you never know ?

If you are looking for an online booking agent,( if you wanna do a
hotel and flight together) i d happily recommened mykindatravel
They have helped us in our last 3 trips ( and my sisters last few trips too) and have always been helpful. No harm in dropping them an email to see what they can do.They helped us with our trip to new york for new york with flights and hotel for 6 days for just over £1000 each for may next year ( though flighing ecomomy )
    hope this helps

    Well spotted.

    Aye, I'm good.

    One giveth, one taketh away.

Yup. Been alone plenty of times, think my third trip was on my own..

No sign of M4RKM since January.
I do hope the fellow is ok.
We had a bit of an online tussle a few years ago but I respect his knowledge and enthusiasm for New York and this forum.
    I do hope he returns.
  • Jakesmum we have booked the 16th. Not having been to new york before we booked flights and hotel separately but expedia offered some great flight hotel combinations that were cheaper. I have flown with virgin many times to Vegas or Florida and have nearly always managed to get extra leg room at little or no extra cost just by arriving at the airport early and asking nicely, I did notice that the last time we flew (march) it was asking for extra money to prebook our seats. To be honest we take our chances at not being seated together as it's only 8ish hours and we'd sooner spend the money on the holiday. It's only been 1 time so far that we were not seated together.

  • Ref Mark he helped me greatly when planning my trip - we stayed at Cosmopolitan(Now the Frederick) in Tribeca and have been back since. The hotel is not the biggest but the location is brilliant and very clean - if you want smart restaurants try White Street food is amazing. If you want beer and burger then the Reade St pub opposite road of hotel is brilliant.
You are 15 mins and closer to everything - you can see Freedom tower etc and close walking to Battery Park/Financial/911 Museum/South St Seaport.
There is a subway under hotel.
To me its the 'real' New York not Times Square too touristy.
Great deli opposite for breakfast - 2 blocks down on the left is a pub good food and beer.
