Oh dear, I hope I haven't put people off with the smelly and dirty comments lol! It is probably nothing and no worse than London and coming from a small town like Bournemouth which is really peaceful and pretty, NYC was a bit of a shock. I am sure no one else will even notice it!! :D

NYC is no worse than any major city infact i think it is much better than some of our cities like london, bristol and birmingham.
maybe there was some sort of problem when you were there like bin men on strike or something???

I wonder if you feel the way that you do about NYC because you tried to cram so much in, and your sleep pattern was so out of sync? I don't think that you get to see the real New York when covering so much.
    Gone ... or have I?

Thanks Karie, that is good to know. Off to buy some coupons then :-)
Can you remember if they had an expiry date on them and if so how long away was the date from when you printed the coupon out?

How have you managed to purchase restaurant.com vouchers without a US billing address. I'm trying to buy some for Chicago but can't get past the zip code (which apparently must match your billing address)?

    Any help appreciated!

Im looking forward to visiting America (NY) for my first time at the end of this month. Maybe someone could give me a bit of travel advice.

I'm told by my local bank (Bank of Ireland, BoI) that some ATM's in America do accept BoI cash cards, but you can't rely on it.

Here's what I'm wondering. In addition to the dollars I intend to carry with me if I top load one of my credit cards i.e lodge money into a cleared card (Visa or Mastercard again both from the BoI) will I be able to draw dollars from ATM's over there without been charged an outlandish amount to access my own dosh.

Or is it safer/less hassle/less expensive to stick to the old and trusted methods of carrying dollars and travellers cheques.

Can I just check: is this a sterling or a euro a/c? Your answer might make a difference ...

So then the next question for the bank would be "Are ATMs in the USA generally picky about whether or not they accept sterling cards, or is there a particular problem to BoI?"

If you've got time to open a new bank account, I'd follow Martin's recommendations for getting one, or get a Prepayment card which lets you withdraw cash, then top up before holidays.
