814man, there are holiday inn, Hampton inn and holiday inn express in that area, also some capsule/cabin room hotels. I stayed at Hampton Inn Manhattan - Times Square South for one night last year and it was ok.

Thanks Richard, they are coming up a bit expensive for a student! She has another option which is an overnight bus to Boston leaving at half past midnight. Can anyone advise, assuming that the flight lands on time at 7-30 how long would it take to clear immigration (she has a working visa not tourist one) and get to Port Authority?

Flights are booked for next December. never been at this time of year before.

Just looking at accomadation and wondering how far ahead we should book. Any thoughts.? We're thinking if booking one if the Affina group of hotels as we want a suite rather than just a hotel room.

Just wondered if this type if accomidation gets booked up quickly.
    Thanks

The Affina group of hotels are usually very good value for Manhattan. I agree with the others who suggested to reserve a fully cancellable rate that you are happy with, then keep an eye out for any deals.

I would recommend that you sign up with Affina to get emails with their special offers. Last November, I received an email from Affinia with a promo code for their Black Friday sale. The rates offered for the beginning of last December were heavily discounted, so much so that I was extremely tempted to book a last minute trip to NYC. Unfortunately, my sensible side won out.

She needs to get to Belfast in Maine where the camp staff will pick her up. After the main bus to Boston we have details of the next leg on a local bus.
I'm not sure that the Global Entry will be relevant to her, she has already done lots of paperwork and had an interview at US Embassy. To be fair the Camp America organisation seem to have most stuff covered and are very helpful, she just needs to get herself there on day one.

FWIW here's Google Maps displaying accommodation near the Port Authority Bus Terminal:

Thanks. We've booked one of the hotels in this group that has a fully cancellable rate. Also signed up to their emails.

It's a long way from NYC by ground transportation, perhaps look at flights to Bangor or Portland airports the next day, when she arrives at JFK she'll be ready for bed anyway, so one night in an airport hotel with a flight the next day might be good.

AA and Delta fly from New York La Guardia LGA to BGR Bangor Maine

Delta fly from LGA to PWM Portland Maine
Jet blue fly from JFK to PWM Portland Maine

    Hello everyone !

First trip in October for myself, husband and 2 kids 12 and 16 to New York.

We have 5 1/2 days/6 nights staying in midtown, near central park.

Any advice on eating out, we are room only would be great. Also on the attraction passes, we want to do ellis island, statue of liberty, ground zero, 911 museum, rockafellor etc. I had price a pass that allowed you access to 80 places but it was very expensive for 4 of us.

Also advise on hop on and off bus, is it worth getting a 5 day ticket?

    Thank You

Google Maps is your friend. That will identify nearby eating places. Cross reference to reviews on Trip Adviser and you might have your list in place.

For breakfast we just went to McDonalds and bought a specific offer (2 sausage sandwiches for $4) to keep the cost lowish. Numerous deli offers on every corner.

The place isn't cheap. I'd suggest planning each day in advance to maximise the value out of such tickets if you buy them. If not, buy tickets for what you use.

It's a great city to walk round. Especially if you've planned your route. I wouldn't do a five day bus ticket because you see so much on foot!

I would recommended the yellow river taxis hop on hop off service. Not cheap, but a good way to spend a day in different parts of Manhatten.
