Cornwall Girl - if you are living in Cornwall then it might be worth investigating flying from Bristol Airport via Amsterdam/Schiphol. I do that from Norwich Airport and for me the convenience compared to the London airports is a major factor."Such an enormous country, you realize when you cross it" - Jack Kerouac0

Just wanted to Thank everyone here who has given lots of ideas and information, I will still keep an eye on this thread but unfortunately DH was taken ill with a totally unknown unsuspected heart condition, and has been told that under no circumstances can he fly, so we have had to cancel our trip for my 50th birthday in April!! To say we are shocked and gutted does not begin to describe how we feel, but deep down we know that we could not risk the journey so will have to postpone the trip until he is given the all clear to fly. Thankfully it loos like we will get almost all of the money back from our insurance so will tuck that away for when we can go. Thank youFibro-Warrior0

My two friends and I are planning a trip 25-30 November to take in thanksgiving and Black Friday. Seen a good deal on Expedia at £585 for 5 nights staying at the Pennsylvania or Courtyard Marriott Manhattan/soho, however they want full payment, which one of the party is struggling with. Does anyone know which company takes a deposit (if any). Thanks.0

We did, in Nov 2012 (first flight out after Sandy hit!). We stayed in Park Slope Brooklyn and had the top floor (with our own entrance) of an owner occupied Brownstone. We had a large sunny bedroom and a private bathroom.
The couple were retired, children grown up and moved out and they were using AirBnB to supplement their retirement income. We had complete privacy the whole time and we researched it well to ensure a successful stay. I will say that this was our 6th visit to NYC and we specifically wanted to stay in Brooklyn and live like locals for a week. It wasn't booked on price alone, which is probably just as well as its not always that much cheaper than a hotel. I just checked and she now charges $115/night (£76).
I definitely would NOT use AirBnB anywhere in NYC to rent a whole apartment, or a room in an apartment block. This seems to be where the issue of legality arises and it's very easy for a neighbouring tenant to report activity like this. By staying with an owner occupier in a family house we felt that we were far less likely to encounter problems. Don't forget to carefully review host feedback too. Hope that helps.0 -

I'm booked up to go back in June, my present to myself for having made it through a bit of a rough patch over the 6 years since I was last there! (Certainly didn't envisage it being this length of time before I got to go back) Staying in Jamaica this time round as opposed to Manhattan, but lets be fair last time I did it as a 24 year old who was a little more "gung ho" and stayed in a hostel & got very lucky as I was in a single bunk room with no one else!
mummyd - might be an idea to check out some of the tours around the city, but be warned that weekend will be "premium" pricing! Certainly should be able to catch the fireworks which Macys put on, think they fire them off from the river which should look pretty cool. I know the first time I went I grabbed one of the "lonely planet" type books & found things which would appeal to me. Perhaps if they know about the trip ask the kids themselves, may surprise you what they'd like to see or do.
Personally I'm looking forward to the Highline Park, looked like a very interesting project when I saw the press for it & have got the inner geek things all kinda mapped out. (Going to the Ghostbusters firehouse, the Intrepid museum & there's a Marvel exhibition on at the Discovery museum as well which the inner 8 year old thinks will be awesome)Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.0 -

For Americans, Fourth of July means outdoor eating (BBQ/picnic) and fireworks. This year the Macy's fireworks should be on the East River, so the area around Brooklyn Bridge on either side of the river is the prime (and probably crowded) spot. Of course a cruise to view them is a popular option. Haven't done it myself so can't comment on good/bad reviews, but it won't be cheap. Once you're on, you're on, and if the kids lose patience...
A daytime option can be to go to one of the nearby beaches, easily done as a day trip. Some ideas for this and other things in the below link, it's from last year but most things won't change. At Coney Island, which is a bit faded like some British seaside resorts, but can still be fun, they have a famous annual hotdog eating contest on Fourth of July.

A picnic in Central Park is never a bad idea (except in rain), sometimes they have a fair there, though don't know if they do it for the 4th. Otherwise, pretty much all the attractions are open as normal.0 -
