I was in NYC last year and going again in March for the second time. After much research we decided to stay in the Holiday Inn Manhattan View in Long Island City. It's not in Manhattan but there's a subway stop 2 blocks away , less than 5 minutes walk and take you to Manhattan in 5-10 minutes.
I found the prices are far more reasonable, approx. £100 per night for March, far cheaper than Manhattan if you don't mind being across the water. The room is big, nice staff, very quiet so great nights sleep and a great view if you get a room higher up. The area isn't the nicest but never did we feel unsafe. There is a diner right beside the subway station for breakfast rather than eat in the hotel which we did one morning but not very impressed. Diner much better.
Hope this helps someone going on a budget.0 -
Hi all.
Can anyone kindly recommend some nice places to stay that aren't the Times Square area? We stayed near Times square on our last trip and would like to try somewhere new in Manhattan.

I am looking at going to the 9/11 museum the first week in February.
If you turn up on the day, are there long waiting lines?
Or do people recommend pre-booing?
Too late for Ox-Boy, but for others reading the thread and still planning....
We just rocked up when we were there in November.
You buy your tickets for a set time period. This meant that even with a bit of a queue it only took about 10 minutes to get in and through security
I certainly didn't see the need to pre book0 -
Hi,
I am going to New York at the end of April and will be staying in New Jersey by Journal Square Path Station.
What is the best value metro ticket I can get for 5 days?
From what I understand that you cant use the Metrocard for the Subway on Path Trains?
Many thanks

We are off to NYC in 4 weeks time staying at the Hyatt Times Square, does anybody have up to date costs for either Taxi or Car service from JFK. Viator seems to have a rate of £68.21 which apparently includes tolls/gratuities etc, is this a good price or am I better to book direct?
Last couple of trips were by shared shuttle which was cheaper but took ages so we are prepared to spend more for a quicker more comfortable transfer, there are 3 of us so should be ok for a standard car.

This is from the JFK website.
Important Tips:- Tipping is customary for good service.
- There is a $1.00 peak time surcharge for trips from 4 PM to 8PM on weekdays (except for JFK-Manhattan $52 Flat Fare trip).
- There is a 50-cent surcharge for trips from 8PM to 6AM daily (except for JFK-Manhattan $52 Flat Fare trip). There is also a NY State tax of 50 cents added to trips within New York, but not for trips to NJ.
- One fare pays for all passengers to one destination.
- Four passengers (five in minivans) is the limit for New York City cabs.
- Meter must read $3.00 at the start of the trip (except for JFK-Manhattan $52 Flat Fare trips).
- Please take your receipt.

You might get cheaper, but that's not an outrageous price for a private car. A normal taxi will be cheaper (USD 52 + tolls/tips to one destination in Manhattan). Tipping in NYC these days is an expected 15-20%, probably around $10 on the airport ride. Would still be cheaper than Viator, though maybe not as comfortable as a private car.0
