Hi,
I wonder if anyone can tell me if I am daft to book a 3 nights break to New York on the 27th of this month. It is really a spontaneous decision to give a surprise break for my husband's 40th.. I must admit i think it will be more of a treat for myself on his big birthday:D
I am really wanting to go ahead with this with in mind of travelling to Houston Texas so he can watch a Houston Rockets game. Is this possible or it will really be very expensive. I look at flights to Texas and seems more expensive than New York but if i can find a cheap way even for 1 night to be in Houston so he can see his favorite player that will be FAntastice:j
We are from Scotland, so it will be Glasgow Airport to start with,,Please help!
thanks0 -
Can anyone recommend any helicopter companies or something that is an unusual thing to do? It's my Fiance's birthday a few days before the wedding so would like to get him something special like a Helicopter tour around New York or something similar?
Many Thanks

BA.com has flights and hotel, for 3 nights, in Houston from £614 p.p. on the 27th, with flights from Glasgow via Heathrow, although that hotel is a fair way out of the City. tickets for the game seem to range from $35-$500 a ticket.
If the sole purpose of the trip is for the game, then i would forget NY and concentrate on Houston, as the game is in the evening it could be tricky getting back to NYC that night and any savings made by basing yourself there, would be eaten up by getting to Houston and back.0 -
Hi all
Looking for some advice. I've been to New York 3 times ... Twice stayed in Affinia Manhatten (pre renovations) and once in Essex House on Central Park Aveneue
I want to try another hotel but I'm a bit indecisive and have a few on the list. Going on St Patricks day too.
Booking on expedia and all the hotels I list below are within my price range. I just am spoilt for choice....if anyone would like to give me your thoughts if you have stayed at any of them (I don't mind the hustle and bustle of Times Square FYI).
....
Hmm. 4th Trip? I'd spread your wings. Why are you looking only to book through Expedia? Have you looked at Quikbook which is an american website that has more boutique hotels on it?
There are a good chunk of hotels that Expedia doesn't offer, that will fit your bill of a bit more spacious, and a bit of a view, but it doesn't necessarily mean that will be midtown.
I have a wonderful view of Manhattan from my room, I can see the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, I have a park view, but I'm in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
What exactly is your hotel budget per night, and what are your exact dates? Without that, I can't search around and make some new recommendations.
I think you're much better off staying somewhere new, especially as you've been there 3 times already.

As this time of year there's quite a lot of flight delays and you're going for such a short time I'd either focus on just Houston ...or if NYC is very important to you cost flights on an open jaw basis eg GLA NYC but returning HOU GLA rather than backtrack. When is the match and can you definitely get tickets ?Hi,

Thanks Josie
Out of interest, who did you fly with and was it a package or separate flights/hotel?
I'm also wondering about prices going down, and your post seems to point towards that. So many decisions!
We booked it on Expedia (don't forget Quidco)
Sorry, just checked back and think previous 8 times I've booked with Expedia, but this time lastminute.com came out about £30 per person cheaper.
I've always booked 8-10 weeks before I go, but there are no guarantee with prices, just experience. Can depend on time of year, but I've been lots of times for Thanksgiving sales and found mid - late Sept best time for me to get a good price.
If you're looking for standard tourist fare hotels and don't want to take a punt on anything out of the ordinary (like priceline or top secret etc., ) or out of the way, then I honestly think you can't go far wrong with Expedia for price IMHO. You'll struggle to get it cheaper booking separately for the mainstream, as long as you time it right and keep an eye on prices. If you're more adventurous / open to different options etc., then fill your boots!
I'm a big Expedia fan (sorry Mark!) I'd happily stay in the same hotel every time, if it was an ok hotel and came out the cheapest price, but I like being in Midtown when shopping and near Grand Central when going to the tennis and don't like being out of that area as don't want to waste time on transport. If you're going to see and do different things, it'll vary. It doesn't suit everyone - horses for courses and all that.0 -

- crowned Plaza times sq
- hotel metro
- st Giles hotel
- Novotel Times Square
- Affinia dumont
- millennium broadway
- the kitano
- the Roosevelt
- the Iroquois
- the Algonquin
- Affinia shelburne
- staybridge suites
We use the subway a lot while there so somewhere handy to go downtown. Would also like a room with a view ... I think it's the Novotel where you can choose a room between floors 21-34 or something like that. The hotel metro has breakfast included and is in a good distance to macys etc
I'm just pretty confused now. I'm probably leaning on the side of Novotel but I'd like to see others opinions first.
Would prefer a relatively spacious (I know this is New York however all 3 times I've been I've had a spacious room)...
Anyway, you guys have the floor now....l
Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me
Have stayed at the Dumont very spacious with added bonus of a kitchen0 -
I've stayed at the Affiina Shelburne when we went to the US Open as we were getting the subway every day from Grand Central so was a good location for us.
Room was absolutely massive! Also hotel is a good standard, with things like a choice of pillows & coffee facilities which always seem like gold dust in NYC. (just to give you an idea)0 -

Have you looked back through this thread or done a search for "helicopter" - should show up a few results as it's come up before. Sorry, a good few years since I've done this.0 -

Looked at flights with BA from Manchester it comes out at £1500 for both of us flying out as economy but returning as premium economy (so I can bring an extra case back)
