Watching flights on Kayak - aiming to travel 16th-20th July next year. Flight prices seem to jump massively in July to £880ish pp (June averages £523 & August £608). Trust me to have a wedding anniversary in the most expensive month! Any idea why the jump (& is it likely to fall in line with other months)? In need of a new signature! :rotfl:0

Probably another silly question but do all the shops open on Sundays, with normal trading hours, reduced hours like here or closed completely ala France?
Trying to finalise our plans for this weekends visit and not sure whether to hit the shops on Sat or Sun.
Thanks in advance, Rich0 -

Absolutely gutted - I should be flying out in the morning and we've just had notification that our flight is cancelled due to weather!!
I should go tomorrow morning and come back a week on Sunday. They are trying to rebook me on a Thursday flight which would only give us a few days out there.
Hotel is booked as a non-refundable rate too! Should my insurance cover this????0 -
I've not got a copy of your insurance policy so can't read what you are covered for or not. First thing is to call the hotel and see what they can do. At least you can get the insurance policy to pay out for delay, which won't be much.
At the latest you want to fly out Monday IMO, and you've still got some good time out there. If you speak to the hotel and explain, I'd hope they keep the room for you as you've fully paid.
Second thing is see if the airline is willing to let you fly from a different airport, and yeah, you'd have to make your own way. I don't know what airport you're flying from, or which airline, so I can't help with finding flights or routes that may be running. Flying indirect is another option, but without the airline, I can't help..

EDIT - I've looked back on your old posts, and I've seen that you're flying from Manchester. I checked their website, and found out that the 9am flight from MAN - EWR was the one cancelled.
I've then gone online, and checked flights from MAN to EWR for tomorrow, Sunday. There are seats available in Economy Plus, so its worth a try.
UA101 - MAN - IAD
UA3540 - IAD - EWR
Monday however, is even easier - the 9am direct flight is showing 2 empty seats in economy (not together), and a number in economy plus.
Yeah, they're going to try put you on the next direct flight that has room and that works for them, which may be Thursday, but if you could do that routing and just tell them to rebook you get out there earlier, it gets you in at 7pm on Sunday if you're lucky enough to get that.
Another option is get them to fly you out of Heathrow, but you have to make your own way there (make sure you still fly back to MAN though). There are 2 direct flights tomorrow with 2 seats available (none next to each other though)
Tough one, looks to be super busy on all of the United flights...

Great advice M4rk . Thursday would be unacceptable if there are other flights before that with room . Tell the hotel the situation as although fully paid if your a no how they can resell that room . hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0

Thanks Mark, really appreciate your reply.
United Airlines were appalling at how they dealt with everyone this morning, I was told no flights were leaving today but they couldn't discuss further with me as I didn't have my luggage present!!
It turns out all they did was give us an 0845 number to call - 40 minutes later (I'm dreading the bill!) we'd been transferred to a flight tomorrow lunchtime but we now have to go via Frankfurt but at least this is better than their original suggestion of Thursday!!
Travel insurance claim team only work Monday to Friday so I can't see about claiming for delay and tonight's hotel!
Not going to let it spoil my holiday - I'll deal with it when I get home, but I just want to get there now!!
I really did feel for the people in the queue who had no idea that their flight was cancelled - at least I'd gone prepared to not be going anywhere today.
I've emailed the hotel to let them know what's happening - but I'm going to call them in a bit too!!
Thanks again! X0 -
Make sure you find out the cost of the call and when making your insurance claim add that in too.. Also, you may be entitled to compensation from the airline, don't let them off the hook if you are. What was the reason for the cancellation??
Martin Lewis has a great guide on here. Even though they are an American company you're flying FROM the EU so they're liable. And it's €600 per person.. If it's weather related, nope you don't get it.
Frankfurt was an option I saw online too, so that's good news. Call the hotel, the terms will say that if you're a no show that they will cancel the booking.. Use something like planet talk for a access number to make it cheaper to call them from your mobile.
Best of luck, and have a great birthday holiday when you get there.0 -
Does anyone know if Virgin have sales to NYC in the new year?
We are asking for Virgin vouchers for Christmas to help with costs, but obviously if they have a sale on that would help things massively.
It might be too late at this stage, but Virgin is an expensive way to do a holiday. Not sure if you're just using the vouchers for a flight and booking hotel separately. For example a hotel stay of 4 nights in NYC with flight on a Virgin holiday would cost you about £200-£300 more than booking the same thing yourself. If it's just flights then perhaps you want to pay more for a Virgin flight over one of the other carriers, but as this is a moneysaving site, then maybe you have a different aim?0 -
Sounds a great trip M4RKM. I'm mainly a shopper and it's a while since I did Chicago, so probably can't help you out there. I do remember them having about 10 massive department stores.
Just back from NYC & shopped out for another year - need time for the wallet / credit card to recover. Decided to do Vegas next year for a change as we've never been.
