    Sounds like a great trip.

A few suggestions - Day one - are you leaving enough time from landing to get to hotel? I would probably recommend a tour another day?

How about doing TOTR at sunset on this day and then a relaxed trip to Macys and Dinner.

How about the bus tour on the Wednesday with the other bits planned

I would recommend union square on the saturday/sunday they usually have lovely markets you could do union square on the Soho day. You could walk from Union Square down Broadway to Soho

There is also a smaller Bloomingdales in Soho. Also remember to go to Greenwich Village on Saturday great

Just a few suggestions. I am sure you will have a great trip! :)

Your right bb69, I'm probably doing the downtown loop anyway on the wednesday so it makes more sense doing the bus tour as well (girlfriend wants to do the tour) the thought of another 2.5hrs sitting after the flight wasnt great either!

Like the sound of the Union Square market stalls, I've added this.

'Greenwich Village on Saturday is great'

Should I change the tue & sat nights round? Or do you mean during the day?

    Thanks for this, great stuff!

No problem :). Ah it will be great! :j

I mean Greenwich Village during the day - I love the atmosphere and shopping there - never been out there in the evening, must add to the list for next time.

Do try and walk as much as you can too. I love walking just love taking in the hustle and bustle.

I'll be that guy nipping to the bar all the time, not a big fan of shows, but I'm told this is one of the best ones!

Probably the best view you'll get having dinner. Hopefully it will open in time for you!

Had a look at the menu for Basso56, the fillet mignon sounds amazing, ill add that to the list of maybe's.

    Have a great time!

  • Hi team

Apologies if this is repeating a question, I have had a quick look through the thread but can't see this one!

I am planning to go to NYC from London in April and want to get as good value as possible on flights

1 do you think there is a particular day of the week to fly that is cheaper than the rest of the week?
2 are flights likely to be cheaper to book now or in January (i.e. do airlines have January sales? or does it not make much difference?)
3 is it generally cheaper to book a flight+hotel package, or book flights first and try and go for a budget hotel/airbnb?

    Thanks!

I've finally :j read this entire thread and picked up some great tips along the way, I've now built our itinerary for our trip with all the information:

NEW YORK CITY 5 nights November 2013
    (Expedia via topcashback site)
Flight from Glasgow to Newark (United Airlines)
Airtrain from Airport to Newark Liberty Train Station, then train to New York Penns Station, then subway to hotel

    TUESDAY 12th November 2013

    Flight arrives 11.50 NYC
In Comfort Inn Times Square hotel for around 2PM (44th Street W)
Hop On Hop Off Bus Tour Downtown Loop (est 2.30hrs)
Stop off for dinner during tour or back at Virgil's BBQ Times Square
Drinks around hotel until we drop (Rum House/Smith's Bar/Deacon Broadies Tavern)

Hi we're just back from New York and went out on the same time flight as you from Glasgow. We had a bit of a wait for our luggage then got the Newark Express bus to Port Authority followed by the subway to Houston Street as we were staying down there and we got to our hotel at 2pm so your timings sound about right! the United flight was great but my advice would be definitely don't eat before the flight...we were given our meal (inc salad, roll and a cake), then a snack about an hour later (pretzels) and then an hour before landing we got a snack box with a really substantial cheese and ham panini, crisps and a mini choc bar. We were stuffed!

We had an absolutely fab time. We did:
Top of the rock during the day (it took us ages to get up there, the lines were huge)
ESB at night for a different perspective which was great,
    walked the high line (amazing!)
    Central Park
    Guggenheim
    Moma
    Walked across the Brooklyn Bridge
    Staten Island ferry
Knicks game (the newly done up MSG is looking great)
    Jersey boys
    Grand Central
    9/11 memorial
We were staying in soho so did a fair bit of exploring the surrounding areas too

    Breakfasts:
    kitchenette in Tribeca, very cute
    Brooklyn Diner
    Cupping Room Cafe

    Dinners
    12 chairs, soho
    Virgil's BBQ (my favourite!)
Dos Caminos Soho (nice tacos, amazing margaritas!)

Lunch we mostly just grabbed on the go but notable places were Grimaldi's pizza in Brooklyn...there was a small line when we got there at 12 but we got a table quickly...by the time we left there was about 30/40 mins wait...and Juniors in Grand Central, oh my god the chocolate mousse cheesecake was to die for!

If I could give one tip to anyone else I'd say not too be too regimented with your schedule. We'd done a loose itinerary just to make sure we could do the essentials but lived just wandering round with no fixed agenda and wish we'd had more time to do that. Next time!

April is Easter holidays, so demand is good and prices higher. Can you go in May?
Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.

Sounds a great trip, I had forgot about MSG, might nip in if we have time one day.
