Yes, Tax will be added at 8.875%.

Also there are rumours that a new iPad Mini is imminent, so it really depends if you want to be buying old technology (obviously depends on when you are going).
Finally, if you get a wifi + cellular one it won't work on any 4G networks in the UK, which the iPad mini is compatible with EE 4G only.

Thanks Mark, could I order it online and delivered to my hotel, would that avoid the extra 8.875% tax?

Yes am hoping it will be new ipad mini, going end of november so fingers crossed.

Nope. It goes on the shipping address, so you'll still have the tax.

You'll still be saving money compared to the UK price, but then you have to factor in the cost of a UK charger (£20), and make sure you don't exceed your Customs allowance which is £390 for everything you bring back.

Hi, being a bit dippy here can someone advise please.

Looking at getting the ipad mini while away in NY direct from thier lovely store :D, have checked prices on Apple.com, I'm guessing the price is the same in store but will i have to pay any sort local of tax on top of that?

    Hi chrispy,

I was thinking of doing that myself (buying a new ipad). I know that they are going to unveil one in October and prices will be confirmed then, but I've just done a quick US to UK comparison below.

    US
    Ipad Retina Display 16gb (wi-fi only) = $499
    Sales Tax @ 8.875% = $44.286 (rounded up to.29)
    Total dollars = $543.29
Average Exchange (its gone up to 1.61 GbP to US, so will use 1.58 as ave)
    Total Pounds= £343.85
    UK mains charger = £15
    Total Price = £358.85

UK Ipad Retina Display 16gb (wi-fi only) = £399 inc VAT
To be fair, UK mains charger doesnt come with the product for some time now, so technically to be like for like I will stick on the £15 so total price is £414

    Total Difference : £414 - £358.85 = £55.15 saving

And like M4RKM mentioned, its under the £390 threshold at customs-if you don't bring anything else back!

Let me know if that makes sense :)

    Many Thanks,

I'm guessing it will be best to purchase this on my Halifax Clarity card then using cash I have exchanged in the UK?

If by 'best' you are judging this purely on the exchage rate (leaving aside the issue of any extra protection you might get by paying with a credit card vs cash), that will depend on what rate you get when you exchange your cash here and what the rate is on the day you make your payment using your card.
It is possible, if the rate drops between the day you exchange your cash and the day you make the purchase, that you could have been better off using cash, if the rate rises the opposite will be true.
One thing you can be sure of is that the rate you get by purchasing with you Clarity will be better than you would have got exchanging your cash in the UK on the same day :)

No worries-erm I'm not sure about the Clarity Card as I will be going down the Metrobank route and using their debit card.

Also, I was originally going to take some dollars with me-but upon discussion in this forum...I am only going to take enough for our (cab ride into Manhattan and some for lunch, dinner and drinks). Will use debit card for everything else and use the TD Bank ATM :)

Actually, the UK Charges DOES come in the box, so it's a £40 saving. Is it worth it?

My Bad! I got confused with the Iphone

I guess its up to each traveller-if they outweigh the ££ saved vs risk of bringing it through customs...if travelers do decide to purchase-its at their own risk!

    Hi

I have narrowed it down for my trip and I am looking to do the below, any advice on cheapest online prices would be appreciated.

    Top of the Rock
    SATC tour
Statue of Liberty - (previously read statuecrusies.com are the best)
Radio City Xmas Extravaganza (discount code SAVE24 takes 30% off full price ticket)
    9/11 Memorial

9/11 Memorial is free, but you go through a till and they expect a donation of $5pp.

You would look really cheap if you didn't give a donation!!
