  • thanks thatsfab, your feelings before you went sound like me, so perhaps I'll like it, certainly willing to give it a go seeing as we can spend as long /short there as we like. I totally understand the significance for americans / those with a connection to it but as time is so tight & there are sooo many other thing to do I don't think we'll be spending hours there (but who knows??!!)

I booked our flights just after Christmas in the AA sale - I remember reading somewhere that a Sat night stay is required for the best deals, and we are flying from heathrow as regional airports weren't available at those prices - but you do have to factor in transport time/costs etc.

just need to figure out a way to 'spring' the suprise now....have told him we're going camping for the weekend in Devon ROFL!

For anyone currently stranded in NYC (like me), this website might be useful to you. Mayor Bloomberg has offered a 15% reduction on 30 hotels to assist international visitors who are forced to extend their stay, as well as a list of low cost activities to keep visitors amused this weekend. Just need the sun to come back out now!

  • I have a couple of possibly stupid questions. I have booked for 10 nights in NYC in late Aug for the wifey, 2 kids (age 11) and myself:-
1, How do I go about charging electrical items in NY?? Mobile phones notepads etc, can I get away with a 3 pin to 2 pin adapter or do I need some kind of transformer?
2, How safe do you guys think the subway is for travel at night, specifically the 7 train from grand central to citi stadium, I’m looking to take in a Mets game with my son and chances are it will be finishing 10 – 11pm.
    Thanks in advance
  • No you will be fine with just the adapters that you have, but take at least a couple if you have a few items to recharge.

You will be fine on the subway aswell, as there will be loads of other fans etc returning from the game aswell.

We had no problems with most items, BUT the boys have 'older' Nokia phones with the 'fat' pin on the charger, and these wouldn't charge in our rooms. Our newer Nokia phones with 'thin' pin chargers were fine.

Fortunately at the end of our time in NYC we were hiring a car, and I'd had the wit to bring the car charger after being told it would work, so we fired them up on that and they were away. It was quite important for the last part of our stay in the USA because they were meeting online friends and needed to get in touch: email etc was proving a bit slow as their friends were also on holiday by that time!
Signature removed for peace of mind
  • Thanks for all the help guys, as its going to be my 1st time in NYC I'm sure I will have some more questions for you over the coming months.

Like Stephb1986 I'm heading to America for the first time for the first two weeks of July. And like Stephb1986 I'd be interesting in knowing what to bring with me - clothes wise.
  • What will the weather be like in NYC ? ..........10 days before you travel have a look at the weather channel.com and keep an eye on the 10 day forecast. That will give you an idea.

What to take with you to NYC .........Sneakers/Pumps/Trainers......Must be worn in and not likely to give you blisters ! Becasue you will walk miles. Not much else really, go with plenty of room in your case which leaves you plenty of room to fill on the way home (without getting OH to sit on the case to zip it up !)

PS "Top Tip" Some Underwear can be worn 4 times (Inside out/back to front and back to front and inside out) Plus then if it is old and worn out you can dump it and that leaves you even more room in the case !!! And less washing when you get home !
