If there are any limits, no-one's ever mentioned them. And we certainly weren't asked.

However have you considered traveller's cheques or a pre-payment card, to avoid carrying quite so much cash? Traveller's cheques weren't quite as easy to use as I'd expected, but we managed to spend them all in the end.

you have to declare anything over $10000, this question is asked on the cbp declaration form you fill out when you land:

Leave her at home next time and take a more economical travel companion. :rotfl: I'm sure there'll be no shortage of offers! :rotfl:

So, does she fill in the additional form it mentions?

:rotfl: Oh I wouldn't be so sure of THAT! But at least you won't be at risk of committing an offence by bringing in too much dosh.

Staying around Central Park won't get you away from the hustle and bustle! Its a very busy and expensive area.
Wherever you stay, if you're close to a subway station you can get round the city very quickly and easily.

It was less than 20 minutes from Tribeca to the centre of Times Square when we stayed at the Cosmo from the subway right outside.
We walked to Battery Park, Chinatown, South St Seaport, Financial districts in about 20 minutes from the Cosmo and its a great base - good bars, good deli across the road and a great breakfast in the Soda shop next door.
I followed Mark's recommendation to stay out and glad I did - you get to see, talk and walk in the real bits of NY not just glitzy flashing touristy bits.
  • I am looking for some advice....I vaguely remember hearing something about renting apartments in new york for under 30 days being illegal, is this right? I was sure it was somewhere in the forums here, but I honestly cannot remember :S
