We are going to NY the first week in October, anybody been at this time? what sort of clothes will be appropriate?

Average temperature in early October ranges from approximately 16°C to 22°C but be warned that the weather in New York is often extremely unpredictable. I was there in mid-October last year and the temperature jumped from 8°C on the day I arrived to highs of 23°C only six days later.

I would suggest that you bring a jacket and maybe a light jumper to keep warm in the evenings and you should be fine. Always best to check the predicted forecast before you go and pack accordingly.

We want to go to Brooklyn Bridge early in the morning by subway and walk back.......if we walk the full length back, how long will that take?

The walk from one end of the bridge to the other will take approximately 30 minutes at a leisurely pace.

I am going to NY with my girlfriend for 3 nights on Friday... we have made a draft plan, would be grateful for any comments/suggestions..

    Day 1 - Friday
    1. Arrive JFK 4.40pm - was going to get Airtrain and Subway to our hotel in Chelsea, but think $36 ($40 less the $4 vouchers found on here) is worth it to get door-to-door service with bags via Carmellimo....

    2. Walk over to TOTR (grab lite bite to eat on way), hopefully to make it for sunset which I found elsewhere should be around 7.30pm (do we need to buy tickets in advance?).

    3. Guess we will be tired by this point so prob walk back to hotel on West 28th via Times Sq and go to bed. Google maps says approx 20 mins walk?

    Day 2 - Saturday
    3. Breakfast somewhere near hotel (suggestions please?) or Central Park?

    4. Central Park & Zoo, Bloomingdales, Trump Tower, 5th Avenue shopping, Abercrombie, Macy's, ESB, GCT. Is that enough time?

    5. Finish off with meal not too far from hotel, possibly Virgils?

    Day 3 - Sunday

    6. Head down to Ground Zero, Statue of Liberty (on SI ferry), Wall Street (anything to do or see on Sunday?). Do Century 21 while in area.

    7. Would like to walk across Brooklyn Bridge (or at least half way and back!)

    8. Hollister Epic store in SoHo, head back via Greenwich Village

    9. Meal ?!

    Day 4 - Monday

    10. Don't fly until 9pm so plenty of time to do anything we've missed or want to do again.

    11. Will get taxi back to airport - will prob book with Carmellimo at same time.

    No museums on here.... deliberately!

    Comments welcome!
    Thanks
    Tom

    Finally!! A few questions...
    * Subway - what's the best way to pay for this, do they do day-passes like London undergound?
    * Cheesecake - any recommendations for good cheesecakes?
    * Is there a limit you can legally bring clothes back in to UK without paying import taxes?

Tom, firstly i'd maybe suggest Central Park on your last day, that way you can give yourselves plenty of time to explore. I just think if you had to fit all of that in on Day 3, you be rushing yourselves. If central park was on day 4, it wouldnt be like you were taking back shopping or anything and hopefully your hotel will allow you to leave your cases.

Subway - If i remember correctly, Mark usually puts some subway info on the first page, otherwise it'll be on the old thread. You could also find uptodate info on the actual website. It's roughly $2 per trip but you can get day, seven day passes etc.

Cheesecake - Never been myself, but apparently Junior's is the place to go.

There is a limit on how much to bring back and phatbear should be able to shed more light on this.

Save a fortune on cabs by getting the train from JFK to Jamaica then the express subway to Manhattan (or wherever)

Save a fortune on eating in NYC by snacking for lunch from a street vendor/pizza place etc then save even more at night by eating in little family run places outside of all the tourist spots.

Not really what people want to do on their first trip to NY though but very valid i suppose.

Good idea, thanks. Just concerned about the weather because at the moment, the forecast isn't great any day we're there!

p.s. There are plenty of places near central park for breakfast. It depends on what you're looking for really. Carnegie deli always features in guide books but i found it to be pretty pricey but did not have to go far to find something else. Tons around the area.

    Yup it's £390 per person.

Virgils is a good call it's always our 1st night meal, their train wreck fries and onion rings are wicked however they are huge portions and can ruin your main meal and their cocktails are huge/cheap and v.v.potent.

Juniors I think is all hype, steaks and burgers are nice cheescake is nothing special.

Think the key to planning an itinary is to be as fluid as possible and try and get your "must do's" out of the way unless it's something that won't be effected by the weather, i.e central park/totr/Brooklyn bridge walk is not as enjoyable in the rain.
Live each day like its your last because one day you'll be right

A seven day pass on the subway costs about $27 i think. Well worth it if you plan to travel a lot on the subway
