Oooh, they freak if you try and stay on the Ferry for the turn around. Everyone has to depart, and then get back on again, then they set off.

No idea why other than to stop tramps stopping on it all day.

Really? We'll thanks for that advice, as wouldn't want to do the wrong thing! Does it take an hour to get there, or is it an hour round trip?

headed downtown (took subway) to the brooklyn bridge and saw the most amazing views (only walked half way)! We then took the staten island ferry to see the view of the lady liberty (i had to pinch myself a few times because i still cudnt believe i was in nyc!).

Marias 1981 - thanks for your really useful post, and I'm glad that you had such a great time. I like your idea on what you did for your first day, as we too arrive around 1pm, and hadn't planned anything for when we arrive. How did you get from Brooklyn Bridge to the Staten Island Ferry, as I've google mapped it, and all I can see is walking for 45 mins - is that what you did? did you just stay on the ferry and do a round trip? Thanks:o

We walked from the bridge to the ferry, im not sure how long it took cos i was on such a high at the time!!! The ferry was great (free=even better!) Make sure you go right to the back head outside and stay standing on the right on the way there and left on the way back. You will need to get off and then get back onto it though, which is weird!

Its generally half hour each way and ferrys leave on the hour and at half past. However it doesn't take as long at AM and PM rush hour times and the schedule changes a bit. To get back on the ferry you have to get off and go through to the waiting room.

We are going to NY the first week in October, anybody been at this time? what sort of clothes will be appropriate?

We want to go to Brooklyn Bridge early in the morning by subway and walk back.......if we walk the full length back, how long will that take?

Also to avoid rush hour, what time are rush hours morning and evening please?

    Thanks in advance.

We would like to book a limo from the airport to our apartment, but wasn't sure if a limo would take 8 of us, plus our luggage? Does anyone know if they do, and if so, any recommendations on which company to use, as there seems to be loads to choose from. Many thanks in advance for your help:o
Probably not: limos aren't renowned for their luggage space! And I think others have said that they couldn't get a limo for smaller groups because of the luggage situation.

However, it would be worth looking at Carmel and Tel Aviv (I think), DON'T go for the supershuttle, just book a minibus. You'll get a better view from one of them anyway, IMO.

I think you'll find it's pretty rushed most of the time, to be honest. We were there in summer, maybe more people were on holiday then, we didn't find subway completely overcrowded at any time of day (although we weren't really out before the streets were aired, as my mother would put it!) but there was always lots of traffic.

Just back after 4 nights. Trip was fantastic and for my tuppence worth here are a few do's and don'ts

Use a yellow cab to Manhattan from the airport, JFK inc tip and toll is around $60. DO NOT USE PRIVATE CABS THEY COST A FORTUNE. Many private cab drivers stand at arrivals awaiting tourists not quite savvy with what to do and unfortunately end up paying $120+ for a cab journey.

Wear comfy training shoes and be prepared to walk plenty, it's the best way to see everything but you will need to use transport to go downtown and a bus tour will take you to places you wouldn't normally walk to like the meatpacking district.

For those who visit Florida going to NY be prepared to pay way more eating out. The food is superb and there are plenty to chose from.

Last but not least enjoy it, it's a wonderful city and one of the most amazing places i've ever been and i can't wait to go back.

Save a fortune on cabs by getting the train from JFK to Jamaica then the express subway to Manhattan (or wherever)

Save a fortune on eating in NYC by snacking for lunch from a street vendor/pizza place etc then save even more at night by eating in little family run places outside of all the tourist spots.

I always go by subway into Manhattan - only costs $7 each way. $5 for the Air train from JBK to the Subway line, and then $2 for anywhere in manhattan (or as was the case in Jan 09)

I get hotdogs from Grays Papaya...only $1.25 each!
