Very excited! Flights are booked for a summer trip to NY! Have been busy dropping places onto my Google map, looking forward to sorting out my itinerary.

Have read through the entire thread and some posts from the previous ones too!
  • Hi again, sorry to be such a pain but has anyone stayed at the Ramada Long Island City? I've found quite a good package deal for our budget for it! Just wanted to see if I could get first-hand experiences, the tripadvisor reviews are mostly positive as it being a great base to just get your head down at night which is exactly what we need.

I have to say this booking a hotel lark is so overwhelming :o

So I need further procrastination, and help from you guys/girls that have been to New York

Here's my shortlist, what would you choose?!

Andaz wall street (financial district) getting a large king room
Distrikt hotel (midtown) deluxe king room
The Roger (flatiron) corner executive king room

There is actually too much choice for me. The price is working out the same for each of these.

I know there isn't one super place to be but I want the best value for money but yet somewhere nice for a honeymoon base. I nearly went for the standard highline but there is a massive club on the 18th floor and although I'm not over the hill yet, I know we'll not be clubbing much esp as we're doing Vegas first

I've stayed the the Distrikt & it really is a fab hotel. It's got great reviews on trip advisor which is the reason I booked it. The service is excellent & if you comment on their Facebook page then you sometimes got upgrades (I got given a $20 restaurant voucher) also worth asking for a room with a view of the Empire State Building.

It's very close to Times Square, one block I think. The area itself is very safe despite being in the same street as the local probation office, which i wouldn't have noticed if nobody had told me! (I walked around at 3am by myself & felt fine)

Can't comment on the other 2 but the financial district is a little out of the way for my liking although close to the Brooklyn Bridge etc.

Have fun...I want to go back!

    Hi
    When are you going?

Personally I would choose The Roger as I prefer the location.
Have you looked at Andaz 5th Avenue?

I know I keep saying it...(no shares promise :o) Have you looked at the Gansevoort? Park Avenue but they also have a Meatpacking location too

    Ok here goes trip report:
Travelled with virgin premium economy on Xmas day eve, good flight 20 min delay. No problem getting cab from JFK to hotel (Intercontinental Barclay east 48th street/ 5th ave) cost $52 plus toll charge and tip. Great hotel, lovely rooms, no plumbing problems. Wifi was costly and tricky as we had 6 gadgets so we had to haggle charges but in the end they charged us $17 a day, easy to get access around city just asked in coffee places and deli/ restaurants but kids wanted access in hotel so we decided it was worth the charge ( we made them pay towards it!). Cost family of four around $150 a day to eat ( breakfast, snacks, coffees, dinner ) but we ate well :)) Visited Empire State Building, 9/11 memorial (so emotional), central station, Central Park, Macy's, got City Bus tour which was great except once when we had to wait 60 mins for bus, saw uptown and downtown ( via tour bus), metropolitan museum of art, new york library, times square, show on broadway , rockefeller centre, madison square gardens, lots and lots of shopping, rode on subway, hailed yellow cab. Briefly saw statue of liberty, brooklyn bridge, battery park. We walked everywhere or took passage underground to grand central. PHEW!!! I'm sure there is more to add. All in all it was amazing and we fell in love with NYC. Lovely flight back, don't want to be home :(((((

We're there 9th April for a week, second part of our honeymoon 1st part is vegas baby :j. I've really no preference but the budget is £1500 with taxes and fees all in. The reason for not booking yet is that in true Mse style :money: I'm always trying to get somewhere lovelier for less money :D

Thats great someone here has stayed in it, I was a bit worried it may be a small room for a week, which I understand is normal in NYC but it looks lovely!

Location probably will be better for us who will want to wander, eat a lot and have a few drinks and just chill. Diet starts the day we get back :rotfl:

    Hi

In early June my wife, twin 17yo daughters and I are off on a multi location holiday to NYC (4 nights) then Toronto (3 nights) and Orlando (10 nights). Flights and accom are booked and on the NYC leg we fly in and out of Newark.

While I would like to keep our luggage to a minimum but dressing for the different locations complicates matters a bit. During the Florida part of our trip we know we will essentially be dossing around in shorts and t shirts but would think we would need something more varied or formal when we are in the 2 cities to cope with less predictable weather and if going to a restuarant or show. To cater for this I suspect we will have 4 fairly large cases.

Any ideas what type of weather should we plan our wardrobes around for when in NYC? Also, I was thinking of just getting a taxi from the airport to and from our hotel (The New York Palace) but have a concern that taxi luggage capacity may not cope with this amount of baggage. Should we be ok?

    Thanks for any advice

When you get to Orlando, are you staying at a condo or villa that has washing facilities? That would reduce your clothes requirements.

We've done a similar trip, also with two teenage girls, and took two cases out (with a further two inside).

Essentials for all locations: comfy shoes, more than one pair so you can give your feet a break.

June is NYC is likely to be pleasant, even hot, so your Orlando clothes could partially do there. You might be unlucky And need warmer stuff, but layering will help there.

T shirts and shorts would be my choice, supplemented with say one pair of jeans (which you could wear to travel in if you wanted to further reduce luggage) and a jacket / hoody. A smart top / skirt or trousers for a nice meal or a show perhaps?

Howev much you think you'll need, you will probably need less - I'm guessing your 17 year olds, and perhaps yourselves, will also be buying clothes out there? That's why we limit ourselves to two cases outbound.

Have fun - you are visiting three of my favourite places!
