deli wise i prefer 2nd avenue deli, katz is a tourist trap thanks to "that" scene in when harry met sally, and due to its popularity you tend to pay a premium for going there, however given this is your first time I would probably still go there for the experience.

Other food places? Mrs PB loves steaks and still claims the best steak she's ever had was at blue smoke and the burgers were fab too, im a fan of dallas bbq but its gets busy and is a tad impersonal and virgils.

The lastest ive ever been to NY is sept so cant comments on sales, however from my experience everytime ive been to ny, from mar to sept, there have always been sales on
Live each day like its your last because one day you'll be right

Many thanks David, there website looks amazing - can see atleast one trip there! lol

BB69 - that notebook looks like a great idea, have bookmarked and will buy that :j You've made me soooo excited. God I'm like a child.
Will also have to join the website(s) you have mentioned, love a bargain

So jealous you have been 3 times, did you walk the majority of the time or did you use a lot of taxis/subway?

In regards to the weather, do you think it would be best for me to take a padded coat prior to going or look to buy something when I arrive?

When I get my Moleskine I'll have to add Murray Hill Diner!

Hi M4RKM, the reason I said rucksack as I know if I have my shoulder bag hubby will dump his stuff all in it and I'll end up carrying it, whereas if I choose a rucksack its manly enough for him to carry! :p
Know what you mean about London, you can spot the tourists a mile off as londoners stay clear of all luggage, central line at any time of the day is bad enough without getting swung at by a North Face sack!

Another sweetie shop, I better find a dentist aswell!

Hubby has looked at the Empire hotel after a friend of a friends friend recommended. Unsure of the price of the room as hubby looked at it with flights. I'm not bothered where we stay as long as the bed doesn't walk on its own

Would you recommend getting a weekly metrocard, I must be one of the very few that loves the underground in the UK, do they run frequent services or do you really need to plan ahead?

Thought i'd finally add to this thread after following it for the past few weeks, pretty much been reading since i came back from a recent 3 day trip to NY. Mainly went over to see a Kasabian gig (along with 1 in Washington & 1 in Philadelphia).
Had a lovely time just aimlessly wandering around for 3 days :) - didn't go with any plans in mind with it being a short trip apart from walking the Brooklyn Bridge which i happily did.. Plus it was my second time going & did a few touristy things the 1st time back in 2003.

Already planning another return trip in March 2013 for 10 to 14 days so will be following this thread to pick up any tips i can - pretty much know where i'll be staying etc but will have a proper look into that when i have the funds.

Hopefully i can help out others with things as well :).

A weekly metrocard is a must. $29 (cheaper than travelling in London), and it is THE transportation option in NYC. It'll take you up and down into other boroughs, all included. No zones, just a single price.

Empire Hotel does look nice, do bear in mind though that sometimes packages may be more expensive than booking things separately, the Empire is posh and expensive, you could go somewhere a little cheaper, and maybe stay an extra night. that's my logic. I like to ask what price you've seen because I do like to search around and see if I can save people money!

Click on the multiquote, and then click QUOTE once you've ticked all the ones you want.

Just click the "quote" button - multi quote is for if you want to quote text from more than one post in your reply.

Yay - I did it, learnt something new today! ;)

The price we were quoted was 1982, it was more but its the year hubbee was born and as its for his birthday kind of ironic. That was for flights and hotel only for the two of us from Heathrow T5

Think we'll definately get the metrocard, I think it'll pay for itself in a day, getting on the wrong line, getting off at the wrong station - typical woman really (thinking ahead ;))

Do you go to NY often?

    M4RKM - think I'll get a travel guide,
On the Moneysaving front, it would be worth taking a look in the local library, even if they don't have the most up to date edition it will give you a feel for what you like. We had one each (total 5), from really cheap ones picked up in 'remainder' bookshops to a Rough Guide which I think someone lent us.

We have about a 3k plus credit card limit (Don't want to use but I can easily be persuaded :) )for our spending but that is to cover food aswell,
You've got time to research the best CC for overseas spending, take a look at this section of the main site. That way you won't be hit with unexpected charges.

I'm excited too lol the first time and probably the most memorable was in 08 for my 30th I'll never forget turning a corner then realising we were in times square on the first night! I was literally like a big kid all week and actually still am. Twice last year.

Majority walking weather permitting then buses for longer journeys and taxi occasionally usually for back to hotel depending on location. But I generally try and wait for a bus. So for example staying at east 29th and park avenue I would walk to Soho or of a morning walk towards the park to shop.

I recommend taking a coat it may be hit or miss you finding something you like. You'll see a lot of ladies in fur in the city ....

the wind makes it colder, there was no snow in December 26-31 but windy and some rain. A couple of mild days blue skies, sun and no need for hat or gloves!

    are you flying B.A.?

there is a place called the Burlington coat factory which can be ok. They sell other bits too.
