Wow thanks M4RKM for the information and greenface for asking the question. I think in the end that I will plump for one of the major chains ie Hilton or Holiday Inn to be on the safe side.

From one extreme to another. I personally would research, get a few hotels you like, and then ask on here, or on TripAdvisor. I love helping other people out finding hotels, and bargains, and know many more hotels, than just the major Holiday Inns or Hiltons.

I think the main thing to think of here, is a realistic budget. The time that the illegal hotels, come into factors is that they're always cheap. To get a decent hotel in Manhattan, on average you'll look at around $200 - $250 per night (before taxes). That said, there are affordable places, and you don't need to stay in Manhattan, as not everything is near everything

I never stay at major chains when in NYC as there are so much better options, sometimes at lower prices. For my next trip, I've just booked (though fully cancellable) the Wythe Hotel. Lovely, modern, new, and near the Brooklyn Brewery.

A lot of people have stayed at the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Tribeca, again, another non big chain hotel.

Don't make the rich richer, but have a great holiday, and please ask questions. Just because one place you chose isn't right, doesn't mean that the next one will be.

Hey peeps, I'm taking Hubby to NY for his 30th in Dec - was looking to book a room at the Empire Hotel, has anyone stayed here before, and is it good place as a starting point?
I have never been to NY so any recommendations would be appreciated, I'm sure there are loads but 218 pages is a lot to browse through :)

218 pages may well be hard to get through however its even harder for us to guess what you do/dont like doing on holidays.

For example someone on here could write you an itineary of "stuff" to do and you may not want to do any of it because it doesnt tick your boxes.
Live each day like its your last because one day you'll be right

Shop til you hit your allocated £390 of tax free purchases I hope.

Get a guidebook, read through, tell us something about you. If you want to do pub crawls, it probably ain't a good place. If you want to visit the outer boroughs, and not the tourist trail, again it might not fit.

There might be better out there for your money, so post your budget too!

I went to New york with my mom in Dec 2008 and we are thinking of going again this year but staying 20th till 27th?

Is there anything open during Christmas/boxing days?

Or is it best to go the week before hand again?
