Approximately how far (distance) would a $10 taxi ride take you?

I can imagine the answers to this question in Liverpool. "How far will a tenner get me mate?".

The Marrakesh is still operating as an illegal hotel, so it is not recommended to stay there. It ain't very good in the first place anyway.

If you're on a tight budget, stay just outside of Manhattan in the Country Inn & Suites in Long Island City.

How will I know whether a hotel is illegal or not? I'm visiting in July and have booked the Milburn which is cancellable and will look nearer the time for deals as advised on Tripadvisor. Is the Milburn legal do you know M4RKM?

  • Hi,

Apologies if this has already been discussed (there are a lot of pages to sift through!!)

I am planning on booking flights to NYC 1st-8th September and just wondered, if anyone has noticed, when the best times to book them would be? Do they tend to be cheaper booking last minute or the opposite?

    Thanks in advance.

Just for information, there is a new POD hotel opening in June - this one is called the POD 39 and is on 39th Street in the Mulberry Hill area.

Unlike the original POD hotel on 51st Street, all of the rooms in the new hotel have en suite bathrooms.

I have just booked a bunk room for me and my friend in September at a rate of $179 a night - not a bad rate for a twin room in New York.

Where from? smaller airports i have found need to look a little earlier (about 5/6 months before) bigger ones about 10/12 weeks. LHR or MAN etc Keep a eye on the airlines and subscribe to some in case they offer a deal for your dates . Your still just in the kids holidays so it may be a little more expensive to fly then .

M4rk this is a good question . Do you know of any good relaiable web sites that are looking into this with illegal lets. I suppose its very hard to even think about this as hearsay,sh1tstiring ,impications of liable and other legal issues are brought in such as similar names or changing names. A rental becoming a hotel but still blacklisted as illegal etc.

The first step is to do a search on NYC.gov webpage - Department for Buildings.

    http://www.nyc.gov/html/dob/html/home/home.shtml

From here, you search for the address, in this instance 2688 Broadway, Manhattan, and then you get a reasonably complex page. First thing that shouts out there is an issue, is the red box, and white text saying - STOP WORK ORDER EXISTS ON THIS PROPERTY - This means there is something not quite right.

I then immediately head down the page, and look at Complaints, number of total complaints, and open complaints.

At this particular property, there have been 80 complaints. 0 are open right now. Lets look at some of the most recent.

#1301046 - CLR STS S.R.O. HAS BEEN CONVERTED IN HOTELS ROOMS.THRU OUT

#1281750 - THERE IS APARTMENT ROOMS BEING USED ILLEGALLY AND RENT OUT AS HOTEL ROOMS

Oh, so it's not supposed to be a hotel, it is supposed to be a Single Room Occupancy building, and be priced accordingly.

So, now we have some complaints that shows something is awry, I then look at the Certificate of Occupancy. Back to the original results page, top right of the page.

I always pick the highest number, which in this case is a CofO from 1964. This is still valid, and clearly states the rooms are SRO, and therefore SINGLE ROOM OCCUPANCY only. If you don't know what SRO is, a read through of this WIKI is a good starting point.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single_room_occupancy

Hope that helps, and lets people research where they are staying. Remember, that expedia, booking.com tripadvisor all these sites just accept advertising money from the hotels involved, and don't vet anything.
