Have no desire to buy any knock off anything in Chinatown - so may not bother with it if it's worse than the SF one! Thanks.

Food and nitpics are a must for Central Park in August as said whole foods in Columbus Circle which is a good way to walk into CP passing Strawberry Fields but their are enough delis to buy a picnic box and enjoy a lazy day from anywhere . Sounds like your looking to chill so make your days from park to parks having cold drinks and lazy chill times (you cant do much more most August days the Humidity is mad)your not far from Bryant Park great place to chill and people watch and a little down is Madison Square park with shake shack & Flatiron Building. You know where you are OH will point you in the right direction. Have a think about walking the highline too its something we have never done but on a todo list enjoy NYC

Horse carriage rides in central park arent well thought of by the animal rights peeps as they reckon the animals are old knackered and miss treated, add to that its far from cheap for a 15min ride, and of course youre restricted to the roads so you'll miss out on some interesting sites, ie strawberry fields, alice in wonderland statue etc etc

You won't get a ride around central park. as Mr Bear states, you'll get about 15 minutes at the most, and it'll cost you $100 upwards. It isn't value for money, it is bad for horses to be in a city environment with cars and exhaust fumes.

    Here is a useful link - http://www.aspca.org/fight-animal-cruelty/animal-precinct/nyc-carriage-horse-industry.aspx

Walking is by far better, you can see all the park, and cheaper as it is free.

As the above . Its expensive and NYC are looking for bylaws to "reduce it"But its been around for a long time now and so long as they have the minimum standards of care they are allowed to operate. You wont need to book head to the corner by FAO Schwartz and you can get ripped off there. Ice skating Central Park or Rockerfeller Centre. My family prefered Central Park (bigger ,cheaper & Longer with less queues)More space for viewing too. We enjoyed Rockerfeller and enjoyed sitting with a coffee watching the skaters etc . But CP gets our vote.No need to book either AFAIK.

P.S we had and enjoyed a carraige ride through CP from FAO to close to Strawberry Fields about half hour and about $70 bloke was nice enough and took a few photos for us etc. (It was on my DD wish list she made before the trip)

  • I wouldn't go on a Horse and Carriage ride. We saw some very poorly looking thin horses when we were there. They don't even live in stables, they have to go up ramps in old Tenament blocks in the middle of the city. I couldn't stand to see the poor things. They are supposed to get a 15 minute break every so often, but they often don't get this break.Sometimes at the weekend there are animal rights people who protest with some very graphic photo's of accidents the horses have had, and the conditions they endure, ( we saw the pictures, I wish I hadn't).

It "seems romantic and iconic" but it's not for the poor horses. They have no life outside of pulling that carriage.

That said, if you DO decide to go, they are all along the outside of Central park so you don't have to book.

Personally I would do the Ice skating thing:)
