I was wondering if any of you lovely people out there fancied helping me hunt out some good deals for a holiday to NYC.
Looking to fly from Glasgow to NYC airports, direct flight preferrably. We are totally flexible in terms of when we can go, we would would prefer to go in April/May for 7 nights and leaving on a Thursday (if possible). We prefer hotels to be in the midtown area, we have previously stayed in there are familiar with the area but again, can be flexible here. Budget per person is £800
Any help would be appreciated, we are desperate to go again but im not having much luck finding good deals at this time!
It looks like prices jump up a bit once you get into April and May. If you'd be prepared to go the last week in March, well 22-29 March, there are direct flights to Newark coming up with Edison Hotel (just basing it on that as that's where I stayed last trip and it's a fab location almost on Times Square, so would fit your midtown criteria) at £793 each. Not sure how many going - I based it on 2 people, but I know they do rooms for 4, which would bring it down again and obviously there are other hotels, that you could look at.0 -
Thanks very much for that, Josie! I noticed that myself about the prices jumping as soon as April hits. How did you find the Edison, a few people who have been before told me that it was quite outdated and run down looking last time they were there. What did you think?0

Well, I'd say it's "average" for a middle of the road NY hotel. We had a non-updated room, but it was a decent size, better than some I've had and really quiet as it looked in on itself IYSWIM as the hotel is kind of U shaped. We did ask for a quiet room having read about it on Tripadvisor - think they're doing some work opposite on 47th street.
Funnily enough, we met up with some other friends who were coincidentally there at the same time staying at the Waldorf Astoria and she said it was an average room - great lobby bar etc., but their rooms were tired and very average. I think they just get a lot of use in NY. They were doing up some rooms when we were there as big rolls of carpet going in every day, so guess they'll be working their way through. You don't spend any time in the room tho, really, so as long as it's clean and comfortable?
Great hotel restaurant, an Italian, Sophia's that's worth visiting even if you don't stay there. Fantastic food - we ate there twice during our stay.0 -
Thanks for that info Josie. The tentative date for tree lighting is 28th, but I guess this won't be confirmed until much nearer the time. Hopefully flying back on 30th will give us a chance to see it the day after the ceremony and we may well take your advice and watch it from the comfort of our room on 28th!
Is the Macy's Parade much the same in terms of crowds or is it possible to get a view somwhere along the route?
Thanks again0 -
hi all,
First post [but a lurker for a while]
am after some advice please -
We're heading to NY for 4 nights in March, for the St Patricks Parade [mainly] to celebrate my uncles 60th [Pat!].
I've reserved a 2 bedroom apartment at 'Central Park Apartments' - [a 15m walk to CP, located on West 73rd]. 4 nights, for 6 of us is costing just under $900 with all taxes etc.
I havent booked any flights yet but have been keeping an eye on it for a while. at the moment the best offer is £350 with Delta airlines, again with all taxes. [so 4 nights is costing us around £470 all in]
From past experiences, are we likely to get this cheaper nearer the time or is that a good price?
One of the group have been to NY [10 years ago] but the rest of us havent, so any tips would be gratefully received!
Has anyone got any experiences of the parade on the 17th?
Thanks for reading.

YAY! Im just starting to get some packing done......we fly on Friday!!!! Silly question maybe........
Do most hotels have a hairdrier and iron in the room? Or atleast be able to borrow them? I really dont want to have to pack my hairdrier as well as straighteners!!0 -
Very jealous that your trip is so close!
The vast majority of hotels have both hairdryers and irons in the rooms, but the hotel website will be able to confirm this before you go.
Have a great trip and tell us about it when you get back!0 -

Hello New york thread, Just booked a trip to New York with my two teenagers for end of March. I have a couple of questions, but mainly about getting from JFK to our hotel called the Conrad Hilton near World Trade Centre. Kids love the train, but bad travellers in the car, so prefer not to get yellow taxi or shuttle bus. We arrive into JFK at 8.30pm. I have tried to fathom the Transit system from the airport and it seems we need to change at Howard beach and then go into Manhattan, but it seems Howard Beach is just outside the airport. We travel light, and I have been to NY once before and found the metro/tube thing OK (i.e. not dangerous) but it is going to be late in our terms (about 2am). I am wondering whether to get a proper car (will be fine as long as traffic is not stop/start) or attempt public transport ? Money is not that much a consideration as getting there in one piece ? Grateful for any help, thanks, sal x0
