2 questions, for mum and teen daughter on travel to ny in feb

    1) whats the best and easiest travel guide to purchase before leaving
I went with 3 teenage boys a few years ago, and bought 3 'cheap'n'cheerful' guides, a different one for each of them. Someone lent me the Rough Guide, which is quite a solid read if you like that kind of thing. The others were DK, Top Ten, lightweight things.

However, none of them even looked at the guides, not even sure they researched online, despite my requests that they should let me know what they wanted to do. It was all a bit spur of the moment for us.

However, if your DD wants a guidebook, why not take a look at what your local library has in stock, and then buy what you like the look of, maybe second hand from Amazon!

Hi looking for some advice. I am a new york virgin and going at the end of March I have a visa card but looking at Martin's table may cost me a bit if I use it over there. I usuallt take all currency with me on my hols but don't think that's a good idea.

My question is will they take mastercard just as readily as visa as the best card looks like the halifax mastercard for taking away on hols. I was going to apply for it but just wanted some advice first. Thanks.

Greenface- thanks for the info on the restaurant.

    Another question sorry

I am going to buy Knicks tickets for while we are there there are tickets available on ticketmaster but I need 5 and you can only buy 4.

Is stubhub safe to use and it says tickets can be downloaded immediately does that sound right? I would like to buy them soon but don't want to take any chances. thanks.

Stubhub is a good and safe way to by tickets.

If you want to avoid possible charges on a credit card why not investigate a pre-paid credit card that you can load up with dollars so avoiding currency conversion charges. Either that or go the old fashioned route with travellers cheques. Any large store or restaurant chain will accept those as they would cash.

Yes. Mastercard, Visa, American Express are all widely accepted in NYC, and across the USA.

Be careful with a Visa Electron, as they're not common over in the US. PrePaid Mastercards are the way to go, unless you're near London and can open a MetroBank Current account, as they're the cheapest way to take money abroad.

I've just returned from my first visit to New York and I took my Halifax Clarity card, which was accepted in most places. The only place I could not get it to work was the ticket machines in the subway, but this might be because it asks for a Zip Code and it maybe didn't recognise a UK address.

I have checked my bill since I've returned and had no hidden charges and you do just pay for what you use.

To get cards to work in a Subway Machine, use the zip code 99999.

    Hi

Ok I am a complete New york novice. We are thinking possible of going this year, if budget will stretch. We have to go in the school holidays due to my work, or we could fly out Fri afternoon, but I would have to be back for work on Tuesday morning. I might be able to wangle an extra day, but would rather not. We would like to go for 3 nights. The things we def want to do are see a show and eat in really nice places. Then just experience New York and go with the flow as such.

Where do you receommend staying and what type of budget do you think we need? I do want to do some shopping :D

I know it is quite basic, but we just want to go to New York and experience it. I just always said I want to go see a broadway show and sit in a cafe eating New York cheesecake and watch New York go past me :rotfl:

    Thanks in advance
