We are going in february, and we are taking lots of layers, on the basis that they can be taken off if it is warmer.

We have included snow boots and thermals, just in case.

    Happy New Year!

Just back from another great trip. Mild weather for a few days early to mid 50's. Very lucky as experienced similar weather before in December.

Not as busy as I remember (although times square chocker and 5th avenue busy!) and in my opinion fewer sales.
Stayed at the Gansevoort park avenue, lovely hotel with swimming on the roof top pool overlooking the Empire State building.. Just great.

Went on a New York River Taxi cruise with 911 memorial tickets. The memorial is very moving and the flow of water relaxing. The river cruise, great for statue of liberty photos.

Thanks again for all advice, and enjoy forthcoming trips... Now to plan my 4th trip, which has to be in warmer weather! ;)

Feel free to ask questions :)

    Hi greenface

Happy New Year! I braved the pool twice in the morning and it was great! certainly woke me up! They have a small area which is indoor, but the best part is swimming outside looking at the empire state building! I was too tired after walking to swim at night to get a view of the ESB, but I'm sure that would be great too.

The pool opened 7am-7pm heated well with lots of loungers and towels and also great robes and flipflops provided in the rooms so you can look chic in the lift! (nearly wrote elevator...) I didn't feel cold once in and just made sure I kept my shoulders underwater whilst talking etc.

Personally I like this area I stayed at 3030 last time (time before east 90th) very close to the shops but I like being able to walk to union square and Broadway for shopping.

I had a high floor (10th) and asked for a quiet room, this is the first time I wasn't woken by street noise at 4am.

The reviews on tripadvisor mention thin walls, I was lucky as my group had rooms next door to eachother and they were fairly quiet, didn't hear much. You can hear the shower coming on from the adjacent room, didn't bother me, but might be a problem for others.

The hotel had complimentary breakfast too which was a nice touch, as after I had eaten my body weight in beef some evenings, just wanted something light! Friendly efficient staff, business centre and free WiFi. I had a king room which was very spacious and had a sofa too.

I would stay there again, I good price for a ba. package which is why I booked.

I generally am only in the room to sleep or rest off before evening dinner, but the added bonus of pool, being in a good location, (subway 2 blocks away) and a quieter location in terms of people means this is top of the list IF I can get a good price next time.
  • i was looking for some advice. I am thinking of aiming to take my son to NYC next year, for maybe 5 days?

    He will be 14.
What is the best time to do this, and how much of a budget should i consider.

We would be looking to see a show, go to all the usual tourist haunts, eg statue of LIBERTY, Empire state, Times square etc.

I would ideally like to go from Glasgow but could consider England if its a lot cheaper.

Would it be feasible to look at this years flight prices to get an idea or is that too far in advance

    many thanks

A word of advice about the Gansevoort Park hotel (and their sister). I've chatted to their social media person on TA, and they do offer "social media rates" which mean that you blag a bit of a discount if you ask them. DM them on TA (http://www.tripadvisor.com/members/Hotel_Gansevoort) or tweet them..
