    Hi

Looking for a bit of advise. Me and hubby have had a tough week(lost our baby) and decieded that need get away for a break. Going to go to new york as like sightseeing etc. Normally I look for ages and research but not got much time as want to book. Looking at going away end March or into April. Cant really go before then as have consultants appts etc in 6 weeks time and want to get that all done before going. As bit rushed dont have much money saved up. So not looking to spend a fortune. Maybe around £600 ish each.
I have saw Marriott Lincoln Harbour in NJ for just over £500 or over £600 with better flight times with Aer LIngus. (are they an okay airline have never flown with them). Also saw the Cosmopolitan which I have saw mentioned in this thread for about same price.
Plan is we will get up early and sightsee during the day, maybe go back hotel for nap and get changed and go out at night for dinner and couple drinks and then back to hotel.
Not sure of areas etc in New York but looking for somewhere that can eat at night without wandering too far from hotel. We are normally foodies but to be honest this time think we would probably be happier going a bit more casual and relaxed so area with maybe few steakhouses, that kind thing.
So any suggestions for Hotels / Areas would be great. Also best deals I have seen have been on Expedia, any other good sites.
Lastly are you best to buy a Sightseeing pass (we bought one of these in London and loved it) and if so are you best to buy here or wait till you get there.
    Thanks a lot
    Yearly Grocery Budget - £100.77/ £3500. January Treats Budget - £11.80 / £100.

£1100 isnt massive far from it and the kids are off school too so flights are more expensive.Price flights direct from airlines try fly . com and flightchecker too look on expedia or lastminutetravel type sites / hotel connexions opedo more . See what deals your Local travel agents has. Get hotel opinions from tripadvisor hoteltruth web sites etc. If you get 3 nights in a ok hotel in NYC your doing well 4/5 nights in Queens Jersey Brooklyn etc could be the answer

The Knicks starts at 12 midday, when will it finish and what time will the superbowl start as im going to book Bar 12

Think 3 hours for the Knicks. SuperBowl pregame will start probably at 4pm, the game itself starts at 6.30pm.

I'd aim to leave the Knicks game and go straight over to Bar 12 though. Get a good seat, and just sit back, relax. Should be finished by 10pm.

Food is good at Bar 12 too!

Hi all, had a bit of interesting news the other day (on my birthday no less). Turns out i've won a 3 night stay in NYC with flights included!

We're flying with Continental from Manchester so having to drive down from Glasgow. Just wondering whether anyone had any advice on which car park would be recommended? Thanks

Why think about a car park. As i've already said, get Chauffer Car Parking. You go to the terminal, hand over your car keys, and someone else drives and parks your car for you. When you return, just give them a call, and they bring back your car to you.

I've been doing it for YEARS.

Waxxy - look at hamishes post just as i was typing some options there to look at
Hamish sorry for your loss hope the break and build up to it helps you .

Most areas are good for a night wander good food every where its often just opinion from where others have stayed . You wont be dissapointed by most areas and other areas are within a easy sub ride away getting back is fairly easy in a busy town.
Sigtseeing never done one but some people say good others great (ive known someone the booked paid and never got to do any of it because they could do it themselves and it looked "tacky" there are lots to do and so little time sometimes a trip around Manhattan is great because it give you a being there map and can then pinpoint things together easier.

  • Waxxy have you tried looking through your history folder? It may take a while but if you visited the site last night it should be in there as long as you didn't clear your history.

I see the problem here, and why you're not finding cheap prices.

If you don't include a Saturday Night stay, the airlines (unfairly) assume that you are a business traveller, and the prices are more expensive. Example

    Flying on the 18th - 22nd = £466
    Flying on the 19th - 23rd = £911
    Flying on the 20th - 24th = £944
    Flying on the 21st - 25th = £944
    Flying on the 22nd - 26th = £1674
    Flying on the 23rd - 27th = £369

So, you can see that the 2 dates that include a Saturday, are the most affordable. So, now we have our dates, of the 23rd - 27th (fly back sunday, land monday morning - you'll need that day off work too!) - flying MAN - EWR with Continental, we need to find you a hotel

Good thing about Feb, is that hotels are CHEAP.

I have £362 for your hotel budget, which is $561 inc tax and $487 ex tax, so for 4 nights, $121 a night..

On travelzoo there are loads of deals right now, and I like style and luxury, and for your special occasion there is a perfect deal - $109-$119 -- Chic Hotel in Posh Gramercy Park (Reg. $255)* - https://make-reservations.com/Hotel/United-States/New-York/New-York/MAR/Marcel-at-Gramercy/PROMO-TZOO012611/booking.php

A standard Queen room works out at $560.21, which is slides in your budget perfectly. Take a look at the photos, you won't be disappointed, this hotel is WAY better than what you could find near Times Square, in Queens or god forbid New Jersey - you're going to NYC, stay in NYC! and you CAN afford to stay in Manhattan - http://www.oyster.com/new-york-city/hotels/marcel-hotel/photos/standard-queen-room/

Onto that dreaded airport transfer - in NYC it's easy, You can just prebook a ride with Carmel or Dial 7 and for $65-$70 inc toll and tip, you're at your hotel. I don't know why you say - I'm scared of getting ripped off or worse - there is no need to "laugh out loud" as NYC is the safest big city in the US. It's probably safer than Liverpool or Manchester, and as long as you use some common sense, you really shouldn't have any issues. Now, don't go accepting a ride from anyone who offers it you, they're illegal and uninsured, but if you prebook, and follow the instructions, you'll be fine!

Now, I think my work here is done, but I urge people not to stay in New Jersey, because it's not convenient. There are better hotels in Long Island City in Queens, which at least is on the New York Subway system, and that runs 24/7. With NJ, you miss the last train home, you're stuck! Standard trains do not run 24/7. Unless you want a holiday in New Jersey, fine, but most people want New York City, and the buzz that it brings. Also, it's much easier to drop off shopping, freshen up, and head straight out when you're in NYC, you stay in NJ and I doubt you'd be as inclined to.

Now who was it that said it couldn't be done for £1100
