    Hi everyone,

I'm heading to NYC on 22nd March for 6 nights. I've got my flights booked, yay! But have now spent hours trawling through hotels, and seem to have only succeeded in confusing myself. I don't know the city at all, and this is the first time I will ever have been to the states.

I want to stay somewhere nice and pretty central i.e. close to everything, and looking to spend around £700-800 or so on a hotel for me and my partner. Does that sound doable? Anyone seen any good offers for that period? The Affinia Manhatten thing looked ideal, but it's not on offer for the dates I'm in the city :(

    Thanks!

I'm seeing the Affina Manhattan available for your dates on Alpha Rooms for £573 for a Studio suite. Thats well within budget and a good choice. There is probably cashback available if you go via quido or topcashback as well. Its a prepaid rate including taxes, if you go for it though, do make sure you don't go for one of the airport transfers they try and tempt you with at checkout! And if you haven't already, do have a look at Tripadvisor reviews to reassure you!

For October $200 is an average rate. It may come down, there may be bargains, but it's a peak time to visit, You'll probably get about $25 off the rate easily nearer to the time, and if you're definitely going, just book the rate on hotelconxions when/if the exchange rate gets better.

Other way around. The NFL tickets are golddust, and the Basketball tickets are easy to find. However, you're looking at next season for both, and the current basketball season hasn't finished, and the NFL season only just finished last Sunday where the Saints won the Super Bowl.

Also, October will be the end of the Baseball season, so there is also that, but some people don't like the pace of the game. Basketball is normally the safe bet for tourists IMO. Tickets from ticketmaster.com

I'd add that you'll have the choice of 2 NHL teams if the fixtures fall in your favour (should be released mid Aug) - The NY Islanders and the NY Rangers - again ticketmaster once fixtures are released.

Baseball will be dependant upon the progress of the NY teams through the playoffs (if they make it!).
  • OK, in a bit of a rush but couple of quick pointers for the above questions:
FAO Chrispy - you say you want to do Staten Island Ferry and SOL/Ellis Island.
If you want to get off at either or both, you have to take the official ferry (and pay for it), therefore why do the free SI ferry aswell, unless you're actually planning on going to Staten Island.
You should be able to get tickets for SOL/Ellis on the day, but not if you want to go up the Crown - need to book online and it sells out months ahead.

Other point is for Katy - Appreciate the need to see Ground Zero but it is really a cordoned-off building site so five minutes will do it. And its right opposite Century 21 so get off the subway, go past GZ then hit the maddest jumble sale you'll ever come across!
  • Hi everyone,

Apologies if this has already been covered elsewhere but I'm new to the site's forums... I'm looking to book a holiday with my husband to New York in August this year (proposed dates 30th July-13th August, but I'm flexible on those - the only thing I'm definite about is I want to be in New York on 3rd August as it's my 30th birthday).

I haven't got as far as thinking about where to stay yet, only thought about flights. Currently these are coming up in searches at around £560+ per person return from London Heathrow-JFK.

What do people think - should I book the best price I can get now or is it worth hanging on until nearer the time in the hope of getting a better price?

Any advice would be hugely welcome.
  • uuuummmmmmmmmmm, cupcakes!! gonna bring a dozen back home with me! Cant wait! yummmmmy
  • Wow, thank you all very much for your swift and detailed responses :T

Will definitely be taking up your advice. Really excited about going now- finding it hard to concentrate at work!

    Thanks again.

My beloved Mets won't.. I think we're cursed!!

I guess they'll just have to hope the yankees get there (hopefully they won't ;))

£560 is expensive for a flight, and checking kayak there doesn't seem to be anything cheaper right now, but it could be that there are no "offers" around as such.

Have you budgeted for hotels? 2 weeks is a long time to be in NYC, are you considering staying anywhere else?

If they are going for 2 weeks can i suggest getting the bus (MegaBus iirc) up to Buffalo for Niagara Falls, or heading up to Boston for a few days.

2 weeks is NYC is wasted.

  • Hello

I am new to this... I am looking to go to New York in December 2010 for 5 days (around the 17th). I have had a look on sky travel for flight and hotel deals but have no idea as to what is a good deal and what isnt. How much should i expect to pay and is it better to book flight and hotel seperatley. Please Help :)

    Hi, thanks for your reply.

Yeah, that's what I've found as well in my initial searches. Maybe it would be worth waiting another month or so then?

I'm flexible on how long we're there - hadn't thought about combining NYC with another place but that might be a nice idea. I've been to NYC once before for 3 days and found we had nowhere near enough time to see stuff - I like the idea of taking things a bit slower this time and exploring the various neighbourhoods. I had in mind a budget of £2500-£3000 for the two of us all in. Length of visit currently seems to have no impact on flight prices though.
