It would depend on the card you were using as to charges.
The only bank I found which didnt charge for withdrawal was 'Chase' they are all over the city. My card is a Fairfx mastercard.

Thanks, I'll try chase, as far as I know, as long as the ATM doesn't charge, I won't get charged. It's a mastercard too so chase sounds promising. Thanks.

We were there 24th -29th October too and were amazed by the weather. We totally brought the wrong clothes and had to buy a few t shirts. We've got pictures of us in Times Square at night with short sleeves and people here have commented how we dont have coats on lol. We only wore our coats on Fri 29th which was our last day. A bit too humid but great to have that last bit of summer weather.

Well we go back on the 30th Oct after 4 amazing days, heres a summary of what we did,

Monday 25th flew from Newcastle to heathrow 6.45am then heathrow to newark landing in newark at 1300, had a carmel car booked to take us to the hostel $55 plus tip, coudnt check in till 4 so dropped bags then went for a wander, we were 1 block from Central Park and the Columbus Circle subway. had a coffee in central park then wandered down broadway just taking in the buildings and al the cars... went back to hostel about 7 showered and changed and went out for dinner at Westway Diner on 9th and W43st, bargain, lovely food, had Burger, chips and coleslaw and bottle of Bud for $14. We were rather tired by this time as it was 3am to our bodies so we went to bed....

Tuesday 26th, our bodies woke us up at 2am  tho we expected it to so whinged just a little :rotfl:chatted and listended to the traffic outside for a while then got up and showered and dressed, off we went to Central Park for breakfast from Farara coffee stand at columbus circle entrance, delicious coffee and muffin and sat on the rocks in CP and people watched :)..We had a Big Apple Greeter booked for this morning and we are so glad we did, he was great, well informed about the area we were in, he showed us the subway and how to buy our weekly metro card (we didnt need to put in a postcode as previously mentioned so maybe thats certain subways) he showed us eateries and bars where the locals eat so we could enjoy the NY atmosphere...Cheers immediately sprang to mind :rotfl: he showed us the Dakota building and the exact spot JL was shot followed by strawberry fields memorial and then a lovely walk thru CP back to columbus circle where we said our goodbyes and thanked him, all in all we had 3hrs wih him and we thoroughly enjoyed it.....We then used the subway on our own  it wasnt too bad and we did get off at the correct stop for time square so we were pleased with ourselves:T, Time Square was very busy, noisy packed and beautiful, we found Planet Hollywood and collected our NY pass (excellent value for money we thought) and off we went to Madame Tussauds followed by the evening trip up Rockerfeller Centre, unfortunately visibility wasnt good with low cloud so we didnt get to see the top of the ESB :( but the city below us looked amazing. Off we went back to the hostel and got ready for dinner, we found a lovely little Italian place called Georgios West Country Grill on 9th and W53rd, once again delicious and very cheap but a little more expensive than the previous night, fell into bed about 10.30 NY time.

Wednesday 27th, Woke early and went off for breakfast in CP again then headed downtown to get the bus to the Circle line Cruise, caught the 10am 3hr cruise and thoroughly enjoyed it, what a tour guide really knew his stuff....after cruise we went to Ground Zero and the memorial museum, that was very poignant and i really must go back to see the memorial garden when it is completed, now was time for a bit of shopping so off to Century 21 we went and to be perfectly honest i hated it, free for all cattle mart is how i would describe it, im not a shopper so only went to say we had and see what the fuss was about, ill never go again ...Ok now for a spot of lunch and we had a Philly Stak sandwich off a vendor outside C21 and it was delicious, unfortunaltely the heavens opened while we were eating and the few trees there didnt give us much shelter ...Ok off to the subway now for a trip to Wall St, notfor anything inparticular but to say we had seen it, it was still lashing down with rain so we didnt stay long and headed back uptown to time square this time in the dark...Oh wow what a place..it was so alive with all kinds of street artists, after buying lots of presents and souveniers we headed back to the hostel and collapsed in bed :).

Thursday 28th, Had breafast in CP again then decided to explore the area we were staying, we wandered around up and down streetslooking at the various shops and eateries, we must have walked for ages then turned a corner and found ourseves in Time Square..no idea how we did is as we thought we were going uptown lol :rotfl:...Never mind we took this time to try and find the ESB haha haha what a joke that was, biggest building in New York yet you cant see it from the ground, we walked for ages and asked several people only to be told by each of them "2 blocks that way"
yeah right :rotfl:i think they say that about everywhere ..eventually we saw it and headed for it, unfortunately the closer you get it disappears :D but we found it and this was the longest queue we had to stand in all holiday, we queued for about an hour and 15mins before we got in the last elevator to the observation deck but it was worth it, the views were amazing, CP looked tiny :D, photos were taken form all angles, i saw the Flatiron building and we decided to head for i when we left, we saw it straight away and headed for it but got waylaid in Chna Town and a Subway sandwich shop where we had to induldge ourselves in a foot long sub for $5, the terryaki chicken with all the salad was delicious :D...OK back on our way to Flatiron building and got lost again, mind you we did find MSG and hundreds of perfume shops, didnt buy anything tho, we didnt know if it was real or fake. Huray we found the Flation building and it was worth all the walking to get there, it was lovely, we sat in a little seated area direcly in front of it and just watched the world go by while we rested our feet...right off to the subway to head back to hostel via Grand Cental Staion, what a place it is, just standing there you see so my films scenes run thru your mind :rotfl:, Ok next subway to hostel. We decided to go out for drinks on our last night so we asked at the desk for some ideas, we were given some but on our way once again we got waylaid and ended in a little winebar just round the corner from us, it was quite expensive so we didnt stay and by chance we found another little bar and unfortunately i cant find the business card i got but it was a great place, deffinitely "Cheers" style lol, dirt cheap had 2 tvs on the wall one showing Baseball and the other American Football the atmosphere was great, we had a couple of drinks then ordered a selection of entre's off the menua nd had a little biffet going on the bar, the barmaid thought we were great, we had a great evening and an excellent way to spend out last night, we finished our night in a seafood winebar which i would call a Sex and the City bar, which was good too, then off to hostel for our last nights sleep.

Friday 29th, Well its the morning of our last day so we packed and checked out leaving our bags in the storage area in the hostel and headed down to CP for breakfast, the lass in the Coffee stand new our order by now and was sad to learn it was our last time at the stand, we said our goodbyes and wandered into the park again to eat. We decided to go look for the Plaza Hotel and Boomimgdales and we are so glad we did, the Plaza is just beautiful inside and out...oh how the other half live eh :rotfl:....we had a lovely walk along the streets taking in all the designer shops before finding Bloomingdales and having a look round, from there we headed to CP and walked thru it back to our hostel, you really can get lost in that place and there is only 1 straight road thru it the rest are curved, the designeer of CP did this on purpose apparently...well we went back to the hostel and waitied for our car to pick us up and take us back to Newark Airport, im so pleased we booked it for 5pm as it took a good 1hr 45 in rush hour traffic, i was so sad to see the New York skyline disappear behind us :(, once we got thru checkin and security we only had abpout and hour to wait to board..

The flight home as well as there was very comfortable and i cant praise BA crew enough they were great, im not a frequent flyer so cant compare them to any others but we deffinitely had no complaints, the inflight food was lovely too...

Well there you have it, my experience in New York, and i will deffinitely go again...
