By reading some of this thread we've decided we should stay midtown, will only be going for 3-4 nights so need somewhere central. The best deal we can find is for the NEW YORKER hotel in a standard room, can anyone advise on location, standard of accomadation etc. We are expecting the room to be small, but want somewhere clean, close to all the usual tourist attractions.
Any feedback would be of great help!:D
We came back for New York two weeks ago. Im yet to do my full post on it, partially because I cant believe its over!
Anyway our room was small. We were told we had a 'river view' and you could see the River but only a tiny bit of it. To be honest it didnt matter we werent there to admire the view from the window. The room was good, the bed comfy, all clean etc.
It was our first visit to New York and we found the location of the New Yorker fantastic. It was easy to get around as its so central.
Times Square is a few blocks walk away. It really isnt that far. I just said to DH it only took us 5 min to walk there, he corrected me it took around 10-15 min but compared to all the other walking we did, it felt like nothing! I loved being walking distance from Times Square. As you turn that corner and see all those lights, *sigh* loved it.
The New Yorker is round the corner from the Empire State so we did night visits to see the lights. Its also walking distance from Macys and fifth avenue. If you have your walking shoes on you can walk to Central Park and back. We did but felt it!
All in all it was fab and I would recommend the New Yorker to anyone. happy Planning!0 -
Hi, I've searched this forum but can't find the posting I'm looking for....
Off to NY in December - and someone posted about a boat trip and dinner and entertainment which she said was once in a lifetime and had made the trip perfect. At the time I remember looking and thinking it was about £40 pp so for 'once in a lifetime' was good - (I may be mistaken about that bit;)) but I've had a search and can only find trips for about 150 dollars! Any help please?Bern :j0 -
Hi, people who arrived in NYC early afternoon - do you find you were tired early? (As NYC is 5 hours behind us).0

Hi, no i left Belfast 11.30 ish in morning arrived Newark about 1.45 pm, an hour going through airport and an hour getting to hotel on UWS. In for quick shower and unpack, walked to Times Square to get bearings, few hours there. Started back to hotel just as getting dark about 9ish in early June, stopped for pizza slice en route and in bed about 10.30, couldn't sleep with the buzz and heat and not feeling that tired. So being up from 6am our time to say 11 us time adding 5 hrs difference, the thing is just play it by ear after all you're going to the city that never sleeps.....Enjoy the experience don't think about what time it is.0

Thanks reallynicegal. Yes I need to stop worrying about everything and go with the flow - first time going away on my own, and was supposed to go before but haven't been too well, but really excited though.0 -

Thanks for the info, looks like that's where we will be staying, not booked it yet. We're going to vegas in a few days so will probably book it when we get back from there, will give us something else to look forward to.:D0 -

I got here 2.40pm local time having left heathrow at 11.55 on Tuesday felt a bit tired by 10ish but still ok to do stuff.
NYC is like Vegas in my opinion the buzz of the place stops you getting too tired.
As said just go with the flow0 -

New York is probably one of the few places in the world it's difficult to feel tired in - there's always something going on, something to see or do which keeps you going. Unless like me you decide to go for a little walk to "find somethin to eat" when you get to the hotel, my legs decided to tell me it was time to end said stroll and hail a cabRetired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.0

Hi all,
We stayed at the New Yorker recently for 6 nights. No complaints at all, yes the room seemed small but it was clean and comfortable, plus we had a south facing view from the 36th floor, so we could see the entire downtown skyline, brooklyn bridge and even the statue of liberty in the distance on a clear day!
Don't worry about location, it's about as central to the main attractions as you will get. Just make sure you have comfy shoes, because if you're like us you will walk miles without realising it. We walked from Brooklyn (having got there on the subway), over the bridge, round downtown, up through the village and Chelsea and back to the hotel all in one afternoon (nearly 8 miles total!!). We just couldn't help ourselves, every street and block seemed to have something that interested us!! Found a great little bar/coffee house near NYU, off Bleecker St. that was buzzing. Great brownies and root beer!! Can't for the life of me remember where it was exactly or what it was called etc.
If you're looking for a good breakfast, the tick tock diner is ok, but very busy in the mornings and not the cheapest. We found a place called 'Lenny's' tucked away opposite MSG on 33rd street that was lovely, and priced slightly more reasonable than tick tock.0
