We are staying 5 nights, with two kids aged 12 and 10. Would be interested in the answer to this too, we were planning on taking around £300 worth in cash and using the credit card for most transactions. We've kept our credit card for this reason, also for hiring cars abroad and emergencies.

  • Thanks for sharing guineapig! Upper class sounds fantastic! Unfortunately I'll be doing it on a shoestring so it's cattle all the way for me lol.

I am in NYC now and bought £1500 worth of $'s in cash with me,for me it is the cheapest option rather than paying card charges.
All hotels have got safes so I don't see as a problem, but everyone is different so if don't want that much cash and your bank charges a fortune best bet is load a pre pay visa like a fair fx.

Also just out of curiosity who are you flying with and where from to end up at la guardia?
Direct flights from uk and LAS normally go JFK or Newark so intrigued how you are getting to LGA.

hi, we are travelling from vegas to la guardia. on our way home we are flying from la guardia to philadelphia to heathrow. a bit long-winded but we had vouchers with usairways so were constrained to them as our carrier.

thanks for the comments re: liberty and ground zero, appreciate it!!
  • Hi guys

Off to the US with work at the end of the month but managed to wangle a day over in NYC so wondered if someone can give me some advise around the things to do.

Ideally I would like to see the Statue of Liverty and the Empire State Building as well as Times Square.

Going to be staying at the Warwick Hotel which I believe is fairly near Central Park / Times Square (could be wrong tho....)

One of the girls would like to look at one of the big department stores etc before we travel on but I did mention there is a Tangiers Outlet where we are staying during the week anyway.

I did read that the Staten Island Ferry is a good MSE way to see the Statue of Liberty if you don't actually want to go to the Island - not sure if I do or don't but £££ and time might come into visiting all these places.

    Any tips most welcome :)

I can only conclude that younger people kid themselves that spending ( let's say a minimum of £1500 -2000) to go to NYC and buy Uggs for £50-100 less than they would pay in the UK is a bargain???????????) no offence, but surely you SAVE by paying full price and NOT GOING to NYC????????

General q - is there anything you can get in the States that is particularly cheaper than the UK?

    thanks!

A lot depends on the £ to $ situation.

However in june i was buying 501's in macys for about £20 a pair got some ralph lauren polos for less than £20. Most clothes you'll find are a lot cheaper and mrs pb tends to stock up on make up at duane reade.

Of course going to nyc purely for shopping is a false economy but whilst your there you can offset the price of the trip, well thats my excuse and im sticking to it
Live each day like its your last because one day you'll be right

    Travel Money

    Hi everyone

Looking for a bit of advice about taking our money, we're going new york in approx 7 weeks to get married with our 2 daughters. We've been twice before (without kids) and weve took out spending money in cash in dollars. This time were going for 2 extra nights and as weve got two kiddies with us weve upped the spending money somewhat (approx $3500). Theres obviously no way i want to take this much in cash but not sure how to take it.
We dont have a credit card anymore (cut up), we've both got visa debits but the charges will be horrendous from hsbc, weve obviously got the option of travellers cheques or i was thinking of a pre paid credit card.

How does everyone take/planning to take, their money?

    Hi there,

We used a fairfx card which worked well. Only time it didn't work was on the plane home trying to get duty free stuff :D

When getting cash look for the Chase ATMs located in the Duane Reade drugstores/supermarkets. They don't charge a 'local' fee so the only thing you'll pay is $2 to the card company for making a withdrawal. Also no charges on point of sale transactions.

    thanks!

We saw loads of shops selling Levi's jeans along lower Broadway for as little as $30 a pair. Not bad if that's your thing!
