FoxInTheSnow- pretty much asked what i'd like to know re:williamsburg and answered what i've been searching for re:gigs!
Thanks!
Look foward to any comments about thrift shops (poor timng with my lbm coming weeks before my NY trip means im not doing 'proper' shopping; thrift or not at all!).
Also bars and restaurants around soho and chinatown would be good!
Thanks,

Hey Kaz - been doing a bit more research this morning. So can throw a couple more links at you to check out.
If it's gigs you want (and I obviously have no idea what you're into) then check out brooklynvegan.com - the 'venue map' in particular is helpful as you can then go onto each venues own site and check the listings. It takes a while but it's worth it. Maybe try looking at boweryballroom.com too as it covers some of the main venues that I'm aware of.
For Williamsburg - this looks pretty useful: freewilliamsburg.com
With both blogs, it's always worth checking out their links down the side of the page as they can often direct you to other useful sites.
Of course it'd still be good to hear from anyone on here who has some direct experience but always worth seeing what real New Yorkers are saying too.0 -
Legend! Thanks!

things like this get me interested in bars clubs and cafes around towns.
Milk & honey bars are old style speakeasys (bars that had to suvive during the 20s prohibition no alcahol drinking out of tea cups . NYC cool rooms and trend setters are quietly keeping these running and finding them and getting into them is part of the beauty and quirkyness of these venues (good one mentioned in williamsburg) access through a phone booth or a secret knock or password. This is a good start to a night out much better than a fake irish bar (im from merseyside we have one on every corner. Dont go into some back street crack house DO YOUR RESERCH enjoy NYC & your stay post back here what you find:cool: hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0 -
OK, I know he's a wind-up merchant but going to fall for it and answer a few of Mr Lahey's points.
1. The title of this thread indicates that discussions about Paris etc are best placed elsewhere.
2. You think everyone in the US wants tipping, try India! But the point is it is a service culture (and a damn sight better service on the whole than in this country), and the staff's wages are lower to reflect the tips they get IF THEY EARN THEM. I personally hate being told what to tip - I'll tip what I can afford and what I feel the service deserves. Sometimes this may be more, and sometimes less, than the "general rule" but I do think its up to the individual. If an "optional service charge" is "kindly" calculated for you and added to the bill, then you're free to cross it all, pay the bill and leave a cash tip of your choice (thereby assuring it goes to your own server and not divided up).
3. Looking at the Virgin website, prices are the same whether you fly to/from JFK or Newark.
4. Agree that the transportation system is far more efficient (and safer and cheaper) than over here but for most posters on this forum (especially 1st time visitors to NYC) they want to stay in the city as it's part of the "being in NY vibe."0 -
Am I the only one getting a little irritated by this almost juvenile game of one upmanship between Mark and Mr L? Come on guys, just grow up.
If you want to carry on your war of words, can I please suggest you take it outside?0 -
I completely agree Innys. This thread has always been so useful and helpful to those of us that are wanting to find out more about NYC and sort out our upcoming trips. Reading through posts that are recommending Venice and Rome or trawling through arguments are in no way, shape or form helpful to what i'm going to be doing in NYC in May.0
