I have been looking into this tonight and it would seem that the US Embassy suggest getting a visa if you have ever been arrested for anything, to ensure entry.
That said, the visa waiver form that you fill in (and the actual entry rules) relate to arrests for offences or crimes involving moral turpitude.
See HERE for a copy of the form.
As for the definition of 'moral turpitude'...well, that seems to be a little vague!0 -
No, if you don't want shuttle/bus/subway then your only option is a cab from the airport which is a flat rate of $45 + tip + tolls. As far as i'm aware you can't get below this price. I'd just take the subway though, that's what we're planning on doing.0

I have been researching this tonight, it seems that you do have to get a visa even for something that wouldn't stop you from becoming a full time police officer!
I have read about people with convictions as long as their arms getting through no probs!
Also phoning the embassy to see if the conviction or arrest will require a visa, they always say it will.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
The system does seem a bit silly.
I hold a UK security clearance which allows me unescorted access to MoD installations, yet may not be able to enter the US without waiting at least 14 weeks for a visa!!0 -

It'll mean going all the way to London to see the embassy which is a hassle.
Don'y think i'm not grateful for the advice it just seems really daft!
Hi Merc.......
I'm a big fan of America, Americans and the way that they do most things - but the wat=y they see it, the Visa Waiver programme is a BIG concession that they only offer to a few countries, and then only to people who meet their criteria.
Whilst it is a pain in the bum, I hope that you do do it and that your American visit is every bit as positive as each of my trips to the States has been.

I've been to othe states for the last 3 years and have never had any trouble getting in. I had a conviction 20 years ago and have never needed to declare it.0

I also forgot to say I have a machine readable passport that has been scanned every time I entered the states.0

Your not the only one not to declare it cambb! I don't think half the people would be going on holiday if they knew about having to get a visa.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0

I had a silly conviction when i was 16 (27 now) after a school boy fight, went to new york in 2003 no problem with a machine readable passport. Know lots of folk that don't bother either. UK computer systems are not that smart.Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!0

Merc
Given that you KNOW that you need to apply in advance for a Visa to visit America, who are you going to blame if you get rumbled at the airport and you get sent home - ruining the holiday for everyone in your party.
