  • Hi, I found this on a chat room recipe board and thought it looked good. Perhaps consutant will advise how many sins. I realise it ought to be on the recipe thread. Hopefully Cheekymole will do this for me.

    Dihunny

    1/2 butternut squash
    kosher salt

    Directions:
Pre-heat oven to 425 degrees. Peel and de-seed your butternut squash. If you're unfamiliar with handling them, you may have a little trouble at first. They're fairly easy to peel, but you'll need a sharp knife to cut them. Once your orange friend is peeled and seed-free, slice it in half. Then cut it up into french fry shapes. We like to use a crinkle cutter to make authentic looking crinkle cut fries, but they'll work any way you slice 'em. Place on a cookie sheet sprayed with non-stick spray. Cover lightly with kosher salt (regular salt works, too, but we prefer kosher). Place tray in your pre-heated oven and bake for 40 minutes or so, flipping halfway through baking process. Fries are done when they are starting to brown on the edges and get crispy. Serve with ketchup, or however else you enjoy fries or sweet potato fries!

I am intrigued by the slow cooker posts.. Making dinner while you're at work... good idea. Anyway back to waving my arms. Have a good day everyone!

Consultant - I've been thinking about getting a slow cooker for a while now. Would you recommend it? What sort of things do you make in yours?
    Anyone else use them?

Oh yes I definitely recommend them. It's great to get home from work and open the door to be greeted by a lovely smell of cooked food all ready to dish up. I make traditional stews with the cheapest cuts of meat, add chopped veg, a little gravy and Bob's your uncle. I usually put it on around 10am and it's perfect for any time after around 5pm, but there's a keep-warm function so if I'm late in it's still fine at 7pm.
One of the unlikliest things is jacket potatoes - just !!!!! them, pop into the s/c, no liquid required and they turn out crispy on the outside and soft in the middle - yummy!!
There's a thread in Old Style with umpteen recipes dedicated to slow-cookers, it's brilliant.
    Absolutely worth the outlay :D

Sorry I'm so late with the reply again - was miffed last night as I'd bought a Kipling bag for my daughter, from eBay, and when it arrived it's an obvious fake. Mailed the seller (who's ignoring me) and too irritated to come on here. However, you didn't lack answers and all positive ones too - are you convinced?
I let my mind wander and it never came back!
  • "just !!!!! them"
sorry, what was that word again?
I must check that recipe thread, I underuse my slow cooker.

  • Moira I think you deserve a star for the inspirational way you've taken to the challenge. Not only is your house spotless :rotfl: but you've identified your difficult times and taken steps to overcome them. I really am very impressed :A

Dihunny That would be syn-free on the green plan (syns for ketchup though) and they do make lovely chips or roasties with a joint - a nice change from ordinary spuds. They are also nice mashed in with potatoes as a topping for a cottage pie. The one thing to remember is that they don't take as much cooking as normal pots, they go mushy if you're not careful.

BTW, like Madauri mentioned, you don't need as much liquid in a slow cooker as you'd normally use, cos the food will produce it's own. Also, I agree with Lois, buy the biggest you can afford - what holds a lot, holds a little as my Mum says :D. Lara's right about the time of year to use the s/c - they produce real comfort food in the cold weather.

Ciara Good luck with the weigh-in :)

I didn't realise you could do jacket potatoes, I must try it.

I'm intrigued at what the profanity filter took a dislike to, the only word I can imagine you might have said there is s c r u b - I've spaced out the letters in case it filters it out again..!

This is completely off topic, but can I ask you all to vote for Different Strokes in the charity vote on the home page please, if you haven't already voted?

    Thanks,

Just a very quick post as I am in work and not meant to be on here. I will post properly later - WOW what a reponse to the slow cooker. Think I will invest in a small one to start off - saw one in Argos for £17.99 its 3.5l - should be big enough?

Moira - sweet potatoes are lovely. Even my kids (who appear to be allergic to eating vegetables!) love them. I peel them, slice them into rings and place on baking sheet. Spray with fry light and bung in oven. They dont take long to soften and dont need parboiled. They are also lovely mashed. You've put me in the notion for them now... better go, back later!
