Cheese scones so I can pretend I'm in the National Trust tea room rather than at work tomorrow :-D

Also baked a chocolate cake in the slow cooker.

Didn't know you could do that! Do you have a recipe? I do have a breadmaker but that's in use so much Id love to try a SC recipe.

Tonight I'm planning on making my microwave sponge cake...and some bread in the BM. Doesn't really count :o

  • finishing up the huge bag of lemons I had in, so lemon biscuits! Now I'm having a break from work, am trying to make something for hubby's packed lunch each day that will stop him spending on chocolate or biscuits....so far appears to be working :-)

You can use any cake recipe and cook in the slow cooker. You can put a tin, paper liner or silicone case in to shape it. Tea towel under the lid to absorb excess moisture. 1.5-2 hours on high for a medium sized cake. Another slow cooker favourite is to do cake mix with fizzy pop and cook in the same way. Using the slow cooker means the edges don't brown in the same way so it comes out a lot softer and usually more moist.

Hi guys, I wondered if anyone could possibly help me out with an old style recipe- I haven't got a lot to go on!! lol My Nan when she was alive ( born circa 1915) used to bake these "things" that were like a cross breed between a sultana bun and a sultana rock cake, they used to taste really buttery and indulgent and me and my dad (now 70) were discussing these the other day- no one ever knew what they were called, but on going on a day trip with a friend of mine a few years back who had an elderly Nanna at the time I found that she baked the same things and had packed us some up for lunch that tasted just the same, so it can't have been just my Nan! Unfortunately my friends Nanna has passed too, does anyone have any clues as to what they might be?? Or possibly a recipe at all?
The only things I can think of are Coburg cakes or kings cakes. As always there's a few recipes for these and not all have fruit.
Were they in cake cases or were they like scones?
Is it worth googling old fashioned cakes with fruit recipes? Hope you find what you are looking for.
  • JIL, Definitely in cake cases, I'll give the kings cakes a look- thank you :)

Just thought I'd report back- to JIL and everyone else that had suggestions for me, I had a successful recreation with something that I googled that people have called "Kings rough"

175g S R Flour, 100g cold butter, 75g caster sugar, 2 small eggs, 100g sultanas- basically you rub the flour into the butter like you would making a scone, add the sugar and sultanas and then the eggs, dollop in cake cases or on a tray, or as a traybake, and bake at 180 for 20 mins et voila!! It's almost the exact sconey/cakey/rock cakey buttery thing that I remember....I didn't think it was going to be that simple!! :) Thanks for all your help all :)
  • An almond and lemon cake for a friend.I'm making the same thing tomorrow for a meeting.
