ooh, I've never visited this thread before:p
today I've cooked a pasta bake and an apple crumble cake at the same time; how's that for economical cooking:rotfl: (in the past I would have cooked the cake in the morning, then used oven again for the pasta bake as they needed different temperatures, but this time I just put the cake in towards the bottom of the oven and the pasta bake in higher. And they both came out ok).

Cake was nice but it needs a bit more sugar and cinnamon (and cooking in a slightly smaller tin). Next time though,i'll double the quantity to cook once, eat one and freeze one for later:D

I never have time for baking but today me and the little one made fruit scones for his lunchboxes... :D He is very proud of himself.

Ive had a bit of a rake round the site for some other goodies which I could make for him, but would welcome any quick and easy suggestions you all may have? I am no Delia Smith for sure so any guidance you could give me would be much appreciated? :D

    Thank you xx

my twin 6 yr old grand-daughters love to make pastry and are getting really good at it - I just help with the weighing ingredients and putting things in and out of the oven!
so yesterday (Tuesday is baking day) they wanted to make jam tarts but wanted to make one big one each (normally they make little ones - but I had made a big jam tart and a treacle tart on sunday and they were really taken with the BIG jam tart)! which they did mostly on thier own and we made their initials in pastry so we could tell whose tart was whose! then they took home a box of ready made custard to have with it!
(I always have ready made custard as even after thirty odd years of cooking - custard defeats me every time! and I HAVE tried making it in the Ding, with full cream milk, with semi skimmed milk, by every known method too - I have given up now, and Aldis boxes of custard is very nice thanks).:)

Thank you for that - I cant see the collections at the top of the page (sorry, if Im being blind! :o ) but I have found some recipes on the grocery thread for muffins, flapjacks etc so will give those a go!

    Tahnks xx

Hi Jo, it's a sticky thread near the top of the Old Style board, hopefully this is a link to loads of info about cooking, if you scroll down there are plenty of recipes.

  • Today I have baked the brownies from the show Baking Made Easy. First time I have made brownies and I can't say they were a success. Although the top was cooked, quite dry in fact, when I cut them the inside was very liquid. Very like those chocolate puddings with the sauce inside. Very nice as a pudding with some cream, but not really what I wanted :(

Also made a lasagne which was lush.
  • Have just baked a batch of star shaped and heart shaped chocolate biscuits :) they're yummy! Just a regular biscuit recipe (butter, sugar, egg yolk, flour) with cocoa added. Pretty too with my nice little cutters :) x

Question: What's the difference, bar price, between Sainsbury's basic white flour and their ordinary white flour. Does the basic one just need an extra bit of sifting, it is certainly quite a bit cheaper.
