Question: What's the difference, bar price, between Sainsbury's basic white flour and their ordinary white flour. Does the basic one just need an extra bit of sifting, it is certainly quite a bit cheaper.

As far as I can tell, absolutely nothing. If I buy flour from a supermarket other than Lidl I always buy the cheapest value/basic one and never bother sifting it.
  • Hi all, not been on MSE for ages, but decided on a quick look and read this headline so I must have been led here - I made these yesterday though, not today!

Coffee & Walnut cake (to use up the last of the Christmas walnuts and coffee in bottom of jar)
Plain Victoria sponge (both these were a 3 egg mix split and cooked in two 1lb loaf tins)
Chocolate covered flapjacks (we save all the dust+ remains from the bottom of 'finished' cereal boxes and when we've a lot, make flapjacks!) Chocolate was supermarkets basics.
All very yummy and much better tasting than shop bought cakes/flapjacks - IMO of course!

I felt pretty good about it as I hadn't baked for ages (Christmas cake was last thing in November!)

Got a plain white loaf and half a dozen of my favourite olive, sundried tomato and basil bread rolls ready to go into the oven shortly. Then hubby has requested some shortbread biscuits "and can they be shaped like mooses please" (he discovered a moose-shaped cutter I got in Ikea).
