Bananadog, you'd have ended up in the middle of a domestic if you'd come to play Yahtzee,I told my son to put a zero in Yahtzee as he only had that and his sixes left to get and he only got one six, guess what he threw on his next go ....... Yes, Yahtzee with five 5's, on his first throw as well, I was definitely not his best friend  At least I had half a tonne of chocolate brownies to gain back his friendship!!
For all you bakers out there, I have just been on the Wright's flour site, filled in a survey for 5 minutes and got 25% off my next order for my time!!! I've ordered 15 1kg bags of bread flour + 1 pack of 125g yeast and it came to the grand total of £11.99!!
Chella
Frustration is one of the games that gets them all going here...maybe i need brownies ready too next time! :beer:Why does my dog chase cars? Even if he caught one he hasn't passed his test!0 -

no problem - the easiest sweets in the world to make!
you need a couple of tablespoons of either condensed or evaporated milk
APPROX 4 ounces of icing sugar
strawberry flavouring (or whatever takes your fancy or what you can get!)
some appropriate food colouring (I use natural colours only as grandkids sensitive to chemical colourings).
put your condensed/evaporated milk into a bowl and add about quarter teaspoon of your flavouring (if using peppermint oil or natural essense be very sparing and only use a few drops at first - you can add more later if you need to). then add a few drops of your colouring - green is nice for mint, pink or red for strawberry and raspberry flavour or whatever combination you like!
now add in sieved icing sugar and combine, you are aiming for a consistency like pastry dough - keep adding more icing sugar until the dough is firm enough to handle. I have found that some days I have needed another two ounces of icing sugar but on others the four ounces is sufficient.
now either roll the mixture out and cut into rounds or make little balls - set aside to dry a bit - dusting with more icing sugar will help or you can roll them in caster sugar.
either leave as is - or melt some chocolate and carefully pour spoonfulls over - put in fridge for 5 mins to set chocolate then turn them over and do the bases. set them in fridge again for 5mins.
TIP - dont try to hand dip the creams in melted chocolate - it melts the icing sugar and you are left with a horrible mess!!!0 -
todays efforts were Turkish Delight (again!) and Cinder Toffee.
The Turkish Delight I actually made yesterday, but it takes about 24 hours to set - for the life of me I cannot get this recipe exactly right - the last one didnt set and I have a jar of rose sauce in the fridge - this one set all right! but am thinking of naming it Armadillo Turkish Delight as its got such a crunchy shell! tastes divine though!
The Cinder Toffee - my sugar thermometer said it was exactly right and i took it off the heat and put the bicarb in - was like mount flaming vesuvious!!! good thing I had lined the tin with baking parch and there was plenty of overhang! but it deflated a bit in the middle as I had to move it and clumsily dropped it on the worktop (hotter than expected). broke it up when cold and this time I HAVENT MADE HONEYGUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! crisp and crunchy but a little darker than i would like, tasted more like caremelised sugar than honeycomb but, I loved it and so did son, OH didnt like it. still, two out of three aint bad!
I am really enjoying my adventures in Sweetyland - its fun! even the ones that go wrong can be rescued if they taste ok!
hmmm, now what can I make tomorrow?0 -

I bought a Dr Oatker Halloween cookie packet mix from Asda the other day, it was £1 and I bought it because I wanted the bat-shaped cookie cutter that came with it.
Didn't get time to make it in time for Halloween so I made it today. I have never ever bought a packet mix before. This was "just add butter" and the cookies were absolutely disgusting. They had a really doughy taste, almost as if they were undercooked (which they weren't) or even a bit stale. Even DH thought they were a bit minging, although he says he'll eat them anyway rather than let me throw them out.
Can't say I'm massively bothered really, I only wanted the cookie cutter and it was only 85g of butter, but I'm a bit surprised. Perhaps I'm just a food snob after all these years of home baking, or perhaps my taste buds have an aversion to additives0 -
today i made my first syrup, was a mulled wine esque concoction0

Not sure where else to put this, but I feel the need to tell somebody about my little 'problem'.
I'm moving house in a few days, and I've started packing up the kitchen. I just about managed to wedge all my baking tins into one massive box, and in doing so I counted to see how many I had.
I have about fifty baking tins.
Please someone tell me they have a similar amount (or preferably more) so I feel a bit better and less of a freak...
(I'm not even going to count the cookbooks, but I have lot more of those than I have baking tins.)0 -

My mum has a metre wide book shelf which has two shelves stacked two rows deep with cook books and a baking tin for every occasion. All sizes and depths of round tins, spring bottomed; different sized loaf tins; loads of baking trays of different shape, size and purpose; ~6 different muffin trays; loads of mini quiche and mini pie dishes; cake tins of adjustable sizes! You are not alone
I'm planning low fat dauphinoise potatoes for later, using a mixture of stock and goats milk with added onions like a potato baulongere!Living cheap in central London :rotfl:0 -
