My tree is fit to bursting with apples, but just wondering how many apples I would need to use for a crumble or a pie to serve 4? I'm going to freeze the applies but need to get the amounts right, so when I come to cook I know I can just get a bag of apple slices out of the freezer with enough in to make a pie or crumble. Thanks0

When you've sliced up the apples ready to freeze, get out the dish you make the crumble and pie in, put in the amount of slices you normally use in a fresh crumble or pie, then just tip them into a bag and freeze. Label either "pie" or "crumble", and you'll know you've got the right amount for each.If I'm over the hill, where was the top?0 -
Bought Mary Berry's Baking Bible the other day and it's fabulous. Utter stress free, predictable recipes - so far I've done the sticky gingerbread, lemon drizzle traybake and the bakewell slices. Nom!
I bought it in a fit of rage at How To Be A Domestic Goddess - I couldn't for the life of me get Nigella's flapjack recipe to work, and some of the other recipes are rather too exciting in terms of whether they will work or not.... Move over Nigella!
I also have Mary Berry's Baking Bible.I only got it yesterday,so haven't tried any recipes yet,but I have great expectations!I've got this mad idea that I'll try all the recipes, one after the other!:D
As for Nigella, some of her recipes are lovely, but a few don't 'add up',and I wonder if they'd actually been tried out at all.I remember the 'Om Ali' on page 140 didn't turn out right, but it was so long ago that I can't remember much else.
ETA-I made a semolina cake yesterday,to use up a bag of semolina that had just gone over it's 'use by' date, recipe courtesy of caterina -thanks.The quantities were a bit vague, but it worked, much to my relief! Also a 'congress tart' also using semolina, thanks shetitasatic.0 -
Lucky you, to have your own apples!

Duh, feel a bit daft now, lol, should have thought of that myself!Getting stupid in my old age! :rotfl:

I have lots and lots of little cherry tomatoes from my pots outside. There's too many to actually eat so I thought I might make up a little quiche with the tomatoes in, alongside some of the eggs from my chooks. I have some cheese that I bought when it was on BOGOF so that will go in as well. I have also been given some apples collected from the wild so I fancy having a go at the apple cake mentioned earlier. I just need to get some cinnamon first.:hello:  please play nicely children !0
