1) I have a basic Motorola and can put any sim card in it and just start using it on that particular cards network.
2) To get your phone unlocked, try Googling, there are websites where you can obtain unlocking codes -sometimes for free
Thanks mate, much appreciated.
Just out of interest are all your sim cards linked to the same mobile phone number or does each sim card you use have a different number? I am wondering if (after unlocking all sim cards) if they can retain the ONE same phone number on every sim card
I copy/paste the whole of my questions (again) because it appears on the previous page (5) and new readers therefore may not know what I asked. Here it is again
"I have read all the posts but have not yet seen answers to the questions below, so wonder if anyone has experienced the answers.
1) Has anybody successfully managed to upgrade their phone to Talk mobile from Fresh and been able to use the new Talk Mobile Sim card, without finding it still locked to the T Mobile network (the network used by Fresh).
2) If anybody chose not to upgrade did you have success getting T Mobile to unlock your phone so that you could use another network?
3) Has anybody found out if Talk Mobile (connected to vodafone network) will allow you (after you have used up the remaining credit) to disconnect with them and the vodafone network to join Asda or Tesco? Someone commented that Talk Mobile may not allow you to disconnect or unlock because of contract obligations. Does that also stand for PAYG?
I asked Asda (very helpful) the questions but they did not know all the answers but did say that once you have unlocked your Sim cards from the networks you can still use any number of old (unlocked) sim cards on the phone, ie you could start using Asda PAYG and still use Fresh or Talk Mobile PAYG as long as none of your Sim cards are locked. Are they accurate in what they say?"0 -
I originally got my phone for foreign travel, so whichever country I'm in I can just put a local sim card in. So no they don't have the same number.0
-
I don't think Asda are correct. AFAIK sim cards are not locked so they will always work on any unlocked phone.0

Maybe I explained it wrong. I mean Asda said that their Sim card or any Sim card will not work if phone is locked. They suggest unlocking the phone from T Mobile (if using Fresh) or Vodafone if using Talk Mobile. Once phone is unlocked then the new sim card will work. However, surely the new simcard will again lock your phone if the supplier of the sim card is linked to another network?
Incidentally Asda say that they are linked to Vodafone also. But when I asked if I really needed to unlock my phone if I upgraded temporarily to Talk Mobile and then onto Asda (as T M are linked to Vodafone) they said it is not as straight forward as that and that the phone would still need to be unlocked.
They reckon that once a sim card has been freed from any network it will work without locking the phone in the future. At least I think that is what they were saying.
I am a complete novice so do not know if that makes sense or not. That is why I am asking for help. So are Asda correct in that or not?
So you have upgraded to Talk Mobile now? Will they allow you to change to Asda without complications?
Best regards0 -
OK Asda are correct. An unlocked phone will work with any sim card.
Putting a sim card in your phone will not lock it to that network.
You must get your phone unlocked asap.0 -

This is correct. A phone is either locked to its original supplier, or not locked at all. And some phones were never network-locked in the first place.
Also, if a phone is locked to a main network, it will still work on the virtual brands which use that network. But if a phone is locked to a virtual brand then it won't necessarily work on the other brands on the same network.
So that's the first point of relevance to you. Where did you get the phone?
Most phones sold by Carphone Warehouse are not locked, though I wonder if but doubt that on Fresh they made an exception to this. On the other hand, if you already had the phone before the Fresh SIM and it was locked to T-mobile, you won't have noticed a problem yet.
You can test this by borrowing a SIM from a friend and trying it in your phone. It won't lock the phone again. Use a SIM that isn't T-mobile, Virgin or other virtual brands on there. If you get a messages about phone restriction or subsidy code, then the phone is locked.
Personally, in that situation, I'd be quite keen to ask CPW to obtain the code for me, if they expected me to use Talkmobile.
But if they didn't supply the phone, I wouldn't be surprised if they decline to do so, as quite a few people seem to be finding them less than helpful0 -
Hi Redux, thanks so much for your time in helping me. I will answer your questions point by point:
You said: "So that's the first point of relevance to you. Where did you get the phone?"
I bought it new at Carphone Warehouse Mar 2006 (Nokia 1100) with Fresh sim already in it, free with £50 credit for £50.
You said "You can test this by borrowing a SIM from a friend and trying it in your phone. It won't lock the phone again. Use a SIM that isn't T-mobile, Virgin or other virtual brands on there. If you get a messages about phone restriction or subsidy code, then the phone is locked."
I tried a friend's sim which was O2 (do not know what network O2 are on). My phone tried to read the sim card by going through some processes but then the screen went blank - no message at all. Actually it had turned itself off. I tried a few times by switching mobile back on but every time did same thing. I put my Fresh Sim back. I was able to resume using my mobile normally again.
By the way, Asda are also sending me a free sim card (for testing purposes). They said the same thing as you that if my phone is not locked the Asda name will appear okay. I don't know if this will work differently to the O2 or not.
You said "Personally, in that situation, I'd be quite keen to ask CPW to obtain the code for me, if they expected me to use Talkmobile"
Yes, thanks, I will do that, but am wondering if committing to Talk Mobile will present further problems once I use up my credit and try to move to Asda. I have too much credit to lose if I go directly to Asda now
So on the basis of my answers, what advise can you give me? Thanks so much!0 -

I just want to update you on my situation and then ask what I should do.
1) I received my PAC code from Fresh Mobile
2) I received my free Sim card from Asda for testing
3) I tested the Asda Sim card. My screen changed from showing Fresh Mobile to Asda Mobile.
So I guess that means my phone is NOT locked? Although I do not know why the O2 Sim card I tested yesterday gave me a blank screen (even though my battery was charged) Does anybody know why?
My plan is to upgrade to Talk Mobile (Vodafone network) from Fresh (T Mobile Network) because I have £38 credit left which I do not want to lose. I then want to move from that network to Asda as soon as my credit is used.
By the way, I bought my mobile from Carphone warehouse with Fresh Sim already set up within my phone)
Further questions: If I upgrade to Talk Mobile will my phone become locked - seeings it is a different network now? If it became locked how easy would it be to unlock it? I mean would there be any long-term contractual obligations preventing me moving over to Asda even though I am using PAYG?
Thanks for your help. Much appreciated0 -
I requested a PAC code from a Fresh operative on 26/02.
Chased up last Friday (5th) and was told it was on the system but I needed to give it the full 7 days.
Phoned again today and my request is not on the system so it has been resubmitted.
There is now a chance I should get the PAC code by 18/03.
The Fresh operative confirmed that I can still use the PAC code even though Fresh no longer operates from the 19th.
Can anyone deny or confirm this? Am I about to lose the number I have managed to keep for the last 13 years?
Update 10/03/10: Got my PAC code so have forwarded this to Asdamobile.
Woohoo!
Further update on 14/03/10: Moved to Asda mobile on 12th. Unfortunately no text when transferred, but it is done.0 -

It looks like the phone is not locked, if Asda works ok, but I don't know what the O2 issue was.
The phone won't become locked if you use Talkmobile.
There aren't any obligations with pay as you go; you can swap when you want, have 2 or 3 on the go, whatever you like0
