Indicators... Why not?

One of my pet hates has to be people who don't bother to indicate.

The government keeps trying to guilt us into reducing our carbon footprint, using less fuel etc. Why don't they tell the police to start fining people who don't indicate?

I'm certain that billions of cars unnecessarily stop at junctions and roundabouts every year because some eejit didn't indicate. If the coppers started enforcing indicators then I'm certain the traffic would flow a bit smoother and a load of fuel would be spared into the bargain.

All the big, expensive cars seem to be the worst culprits. It is true!

I don't move unless I see a car's indicator going on. I've been caught out before by coming out of a junction or a roundabout because the cars coming towards me have had on their indicator to turn - and they don't because the indicators have obviously been not switched off since they last used them and the driver's unaware of it.

My gripe would include people who don't check their indicators have gone off after they turn. I know they're supposed to go off, and they usually do - but they don't always. It doesn't take a second to look and see if they've stopped and flick the stalk off yourself.

It was 3am one night in a small town when I approached a roundabout. Nothing around, houses all had lights off, no other vehicles anywhere to be seen on my journey. Dead as a doornail. Roundabout was 3 actual roads and the 4th was a short/small dead end residential road. Nothing about. Nobody .... dead .... so I didn't indicate on this small, local roundabout - indicating is for the use of other road users... there were none. 30mph, not a fast or busy road, just a normal everyday quiet road through a small town.

Suddenly, from nowhere, a police car pulled me over. He'd been sat, parked, in the dead end road, hiding, lights off .... and pulled me over for not indicating!

Yep, that's true enough and at least if you saw the indicator starting and you're cautious then you'll be okay. The incidents of prolonged indicating aren't too common but are equally annoying.

I live in a new town, which is riddled with roundabouts. Some mornings, waiting to drive onto a roundabout, I could sit and watch 20 cars zoom right round and only 5 or 6 bother to indicate at all. Then only half of them indicate left to leave the roundabout.

I indicate all the time - be there other road users or not. It's just habit - and probably a good one to get into for above reason. It doesn't take any effort to put it on.

Sorry, it demonstrates poor driving skills, and can cause problems.

A driver should only indicate if it would help another road user that is there, or may reasonably be expected to benefit from them.

Wow! Never heard of that before!

I got stopped once when I approached a quiet roundabout late at night, a police car was already sitting, ready to enter the roundabout before me. So, I stopped to see if they were actually going to move as they had right of way. They drove onto the roundabout, I followed and then they circled right round to follow me. I got pulled over, asked why I hesitated. I told them I wasn't sure if they were going to go, so I stopped, they went and that's all I could say. They said my behaviour was suspicious, so they searched my car and breathalysed me.

Back then, I was working 'til 2AM several nights a week and I used to get stopped quite often. I think the police get bored late at night, they just like to pull over anyone they can find.
indicating is for the use of other road users...

I did a DriveTech course a few months ago, during the assessment I indicated on an empty road to turn left into an empty junction. The instructor told me I shouldn't have indicated because it demonstrated to him that I was unaware of the traffic conditions. I told him that I indicated for the benefit of a pedestrian who was waiting to cross the road in front of me. He wasn't happy at all but didn't say anything else about it.

So what problems could it cause?
