Lighten up you lot! If that's all you can think of to castigate the motorist then there are far worse driving habits to get your knickers in a twist. For instance, what about those Scotch cars ("S" as second letter in the number plate) going home(?) hogging the centre lane on the M1? Every time I am on it I see this happening for mile after mile after mile, irrespective of whether there are any other cars around. That IS dangerous.

If i was looking out of my bedroom window and watching a car driving by at 3am and saw them indicate, it wouldn't even cross my mind to think they were a bad driver. Quite the opposite actually.

Strangely, I would think, there goes another plonker driving on auto pilot without giving any thought to what they are doing.:)

Or perhaps - there goes PasturesNew not making the same mistake twice :p

So prey tell, what are these potential problems caused by indicating for no one's benefit? ;)

Read any of the 3 books that I have listed, they will all explain the basic skills of driving properly/ safely.

Or you could give us an idea of what they say and enlighten everyone else who may be interested.

I'm not disagreeing with you btw, I have heard the same thing about this from the IAM but would be interested knowing exactly why they suggest it.

Mirror, assess the situation, Signal, if it would help another road user that may be reasonably expected to be there or benefit from your signal, Manouvre.

    ;)

Strange that my driving teacher (who was a retired traffic policeman) never mentioned that one to me. :)

He/she wasn't a very good ADI then, because somebody is a " retired Traffic Policeman " doesn't mean he was a good driver, he was the best of a bad bunch more likely, that's all.

    BTW, Which Grade was he?

It was 3am one night in a small town when I approached a roundabout. Nothing around, houses all had lights off, no other vehicles anywhere to be seen on my journey. Dead as a doornail. Roundabout was 3 actual roads and the 4th was a short/small dead end residential road. Nothing about. Nobody .... dead .... so I didn't indicate on this small, local roundabout - indicating is for the use of other road users... there were none. 30mph, not a fast or busy road, just a normal everyday quiet road through a small town.

Suddenly, from nowhere, a police car pulled me over. He'd been sat, parked, in the dead end road, hiding, lights off .... and pulled me over for not indicating!

Can't help thinking that your lack of indication was their excuse to see what you were up to in a place where all decent people were long in their beds.;)

I don't know. It was 23 years ago.
