If it's any consolation, I never noticed your slippers. And I doubt Marley did either, as he didn't comment!! You were good :)

Had a women from sp here yesterday. Hubby answered the door and can be persuaded to buy anything if i am not alert. Anyway i went to see what was happening and she tried to give me the spiel, bg is going uo, sp have the cheapest etc. i interrupted her 3 times to tell her i had only changed providers 3 months ago, but she wasn't interested even when I said i was under contract for 12 months. I was trying to be polite and not to slam the door in her face. Eventually i drew her attention to my "no cold callers " sign and informed that what she was doing was illegal and she could be prosecuted for it.She hadn,t a clue and i have never seen anybody scarper so fast as when i asked for her name. So thanks to MSE for that notice.

my friend has a brilliant response to ALL salespeople who insist he is paying over the odds for services - he is a Scot and by his own admission has a dour face - his sense of humour is very dry
so the standard conversation goes like this

" excuse me sir, can I chat to you about your Gas/electric/phone tariff"

    friend
    " yes certainly"

    salesperson
" well I note from our records that you are paying too much for your gas/eletric/phone would you like to swap providers and save some money?"

    friend
" no hen/mate, I'm minted and I love paying over the odds for everything"

once what he has said sinks in, the look on their face is priceless and because he says it with such a straight face, everyone takes him seriously

try it - it's worth it for the laugh

Funny you should say that. The 'I'm happy to pay more" response does work well. I've had utilities sellers on the doorstep before and I tell them I'm with Ecotricity, which is a green energy supplier, and that I buy my utilities based on ethics and green credentials, not price. Most of them have no idea who Ecotricity are and when faced with someone who has no interest in cost turn tail and scarper.

It blows their whole sales pitch out of the water.

I had one a long time ago who tried to persuade me to switch on the basis they plant a tree or something (npower?) and I told them £2 on a sapling didn't really compare to an ex-hippie running a private utilities company that ploughs all of its profits back into renewables energy infrastructure. She looked like a rabbit in the headlights.
