Elantan, you will need to look into this carefully because you are changing your house from a single dwelling into two, also if you do go through this then DO charge your son a proper rent, you are doing him no favours by letting him live rent free

I agree with Dragon. Uni is a great learning curve and even if he's at home he'll get a substantial (well I think it is anyway) loan. Even if you are taking it from him as rent and saving it back for him - don't let him live rent free.

Hi El! What a lot of thinking you two have been doing!! I think it is something to think of for the longer term - save up, don't rush into it. Take the time as you mention to get OH to give up (if he can) his "luxuries/essentials" whichever way he sees them and to think about the alternatives.

Also, get a builder or two in to give you a rough idea how much it would cost, then double it for a more realistic figure, and start saving - if you do the work you will have money towards it, and if you don't do the work, you will have money for a rainy day etc etc.

BTW, good to see the diary made a re-appearance!!

HI Elantan. It's a shame he has that attitude. I know it's not easy to get jobs, but I wonder if there is somewhere he could get some career advice. As you say, he can't carry on in his present job til he's 65. He must have lots of transferrable skills.
